At my level of racing, a few watts saved through aerodynamic considerations could easily mean the difference in finishing 24th or 25th in my next criterium. Despite that fact, I do like to run my GoPro or Virb during races.
I have 5 possible mounts. From a purely aero perspective, which would penalize me the least - see poll and discuss.

chest strap probably.... of the choices behind the seat tucked under the seat... but they you are only getting footage in the rear. The rest are probably all ****ty aerowise.. but I'd chose barfly if I had too.

I voted for "under front computer mount", even though technically behind the seat post is probably more aero - it's just that rear-facing videos are garbage.

A quick aside: I know you didn't ask so this is more for everyone else. When they first came on the scene I liked watching some race video. like 5% of the race as no one seems to know how to edit to the interesting parts. Because of this lack of editing I just don't bather ever really watching them at all anymore. Every week there are stacks of them that are posted and shared and I just couldn't imagine wanting to watch one ever again. Don't know if I am alone in this or not. I get the course preview stuff and/or using the data overlay to scout your competition but....just to watch?

FTR - I'm with you on watching an entire unedited race. That's only of interest to me, someone else who was in the race, or someone else with a specific interest in the course or one of the racers. But I do enjoy seeing videos from my competitors and occasionally gain insights into what was actually going on vs what I thought was going on. I've had a competitor use one of my videos to try to put together what happened in a crash. The videos don't cost me anything to make or post, so they're akin to throwing a post out on a web forum.

WRT aero - I would have assumed under the seat wold be the most aero mount - clearly under the Garmin or on the front skewer are just wind blocks. But I was recently listening to an engineer defend aero seatposts, and he made the argument that by virtue of your body and legs funneling air into the seatpost, aero considerations were very important in that area. So I've been sticking the camera on the rear skewer, thinking that the air flow is already disturbed from pedaling and my foot, but I'm ambivalent about it.

From an aesthetic perspective, the skewer mounts do give a nice perspective on the race, show a little of the wheel, and can face forward or rearward. I'm partial to rear facing video (I'd rather look at faces than butts), but I usually choose a direction based on whether I think there will be more to see in front of me or behind me.

I was surprised to get feedback from (some) youtube subscribers that they wanted full 1-hour crits so they could them on while on the trainer..

But me personally I would never watch a full race video, even my own. Especially not my own probably lol.

I love the fact that I can ask a specific question: "Which is the most aero placement for a device" in hopes of discovering some wind tunnel data or at least educated discussion on aerodynamics, and instead I get a discussion of video editing and race tactics. Very helpful guys, thanks!

In your jersey, between your shoulder blades. It will reduce the turbulence and low pressure drag from your helmet. (Do check the racing rules, I believe UCI wil consider this illegal.)

Thanks! Don't know why that didn't show up in my previous googling.
I suppose the up front mount had the least penalty because it was close to the stem. Wonder if the drag would be closer to above the stem when mounted under an out front Garmin (1-2" in front of headset).

I have a Hero5 Session that I mount out-front under my Garmin. I feel like it's not too bad vs. the larger surface area of a standard Hero.

The main drawback is the battery life of course, so I just pick & choose when to turn it on/off. Pretty easy to do while riding.

Apparently it wasn't a very popular product, as it's been discontinued - but I like it FWIW.
