just because you become famous doesn’t mean you put your pants on differently
work hard and be good at what you do and don’t expect special treatment
im sure MT was given a hard time but he was able to overcome that stuff and become a champion anyway. A true American.

And in his case, just hope that some racist doesn't decide to shoot him one day. "Given a hard time" really trivializes the horrors of that era.
I think your heart is probably in the right place, but what he had to contend with is way beyond anything your average champion of any sport would have to contend with.

A true American will fight the institutions and win. If you have talent you can work hard and make it to the top in this country.

I find it hard to believe that there is one in hundred (or maybe a thousand) U.S. cyclists who could name a single bicycle racing champion from the last century other than Lance Armstrong and perhaps Greg Lemond.

I ride to clear my mind
Godfrey from the Godfrey Complex on SiriusXM mentioned him and that was the first time I heard mention of him in 2018. I may have seen his name but never payed attention.

An interesting read of a post for sure. I had the pleasure of riding with Nelson Veils, and what a gentleman! And one of my good friends was George Taliaferro who passed away last year. Another color breaking athlete, who was the first man of color drafted into the NFL, and holds the record for number of positions played in the game. He and I had many discussions about the difficulties placed on talented players of color in the early twentieth century. It still resonates with folks like myself who grew up under segregation. For me it is humbling to see the things those early athletes went through just to compete. I am strongly in support of the track at Indianapolis that bears the name Major Taylor velodrome. Smiles, MH

I just wish that Major Taylor Blvd. in Worcester was a better place to ride on--I get a little excited just seeing the name, but the choice of road to honor him is almost ironic.
