I'm not too concerned about the year of the bike- more concerned about the features that went along with that year model.

There's nothing "1969" I can think of- bike wise- that I'd want to hunt down. I've never had the "birth year model" thing- I guess because most of the stuff I dig is either older or newer.

Not sure, the Stronglight is a recent update, I didn't care but you can't be picky when these come along you take what you can get. It could have came with one and knowing Schwinn you probably could have ordered whatever you wanted.

I'm too old to contribute to this thread. 'Wouldn't care to ride anything manufactured in my birth year.

I was born in 1964 as a preemie. That Roma Olympiade is a nice bike built when I was a baby. A nice representative for 1964. Enjoy your one owner, original well cared for survivor with pride. I love your Legnano classic.

Still looking for something from ‘59, but not obsessively. A Legnano would be cool, but so would a Raleigh 5-speed. The Raleigh Sports is the closest I’ve come.

Though it unlikely I'd find a birth year bike for myself (1943 ) I poked around a bit out of curiosity. Stumbled on this which I found interesting. If it's a distraction to the thread, my apologies.

Maybe changing my birth year can justify a new desirable bike.
Hmmmnn - which year should I choose?
Masi’s prime years?, 70s for a DeRosa? 60s Legnano?
Guess any year that makes me feel younger.
Maybe that’s the attraction.

I have yet to find a birth year bike for myself, but I have one that would have worked for my brother. 1946 Raleigh Lenton Sports

I agree with 2cam16. I think it would be cool to have one. Anyone have a 1962 vintage something in size small?

The older you are, the less likely you are to have a bike made in the year of your birth.

The date on the hub of my Rudge Sports is 1962, one year after my birth year.

I am 10 years older than my oldest bicycle that has mostly original components. If I had a birth year bicycle, I would want to update at least the driveline.

The cranks on the Ken Ryall are 170mm, so nothing unusual. I think they look longer because that big ring is a 46t, iirc, on the Stronglight 99 crankset. Perhaps also some photo distortion.

The reverse of John here. The newest bike in my fleet that I recognize as part of the collection is 8 years older than me. The oldest is 37 years older.

Every time I've had a late '80s bike, I've never liked it enough to keep. Had a chance to pick up a Concorde PDM Worldcup bearing the year in question (and an Eddy Merckx near the same timeline), and passed on making the effort. The cost, odd color schemes (either super conservative or over the top wild), and understated lugwork just doesn't do it for me.

This Pinarello Cadore was the closest I got to a birth bike. It looked stunning, worked perfectly, and felt about as special as a mid-range Japanese bike to ride. It was cold and soulless, and I couldn't justify keeping it:

Could be the slenderness of the crank arms, too.

I would rather have a bike that evokes memories, instead of a bike made when I was an infant. When I was in middle school in the mid seventies, a kid on my bus was raving about getting a new Fuji and how they were so much better than the Schwinn Varsity and Huffy bikes that everyone else had. I ended up buying a used Kabuki, because I didn't have enough to get a Fuji. I don't know what model he got, but a Fuji from that era would mean more to me than something from the early sixties. Also, I wouldn't be concerned about upgrades, because things were changing rapidly back then, so it was normal to swap parts whenever something new came out, or when you saved enough money to upgrade to a lighter version.
