Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I got hit in the head with a golf ball today

Rode by a golf course. The road runs parallel to hole 7. Doing a cool 20 mph and then BAM. Homeboy shanked his 7-iron something awful as I rolled by about 80 yards away. He apologized profusely and gave me $200 cash on the spot for a new helmet.

So... part 2 of the thread. What helmet should I buy for $200?

Spend the $200 towards a gopro so you have a video next time it happens.

Is there visible damage on the helmet?

Not really, but the foam feels a bit crunchy below the plastic where it hit. I thought it was a bird at first. Golf is such a useless game.

I came within a couple feet of being nailed by a golf ball a few weeks ago on a 40mph descent.

It was amazing how powerfully it hit the ground right in front of me, and I'm convinced it would have knocked me out.

You're lucky (I guess?) it hit your helmet and not your face.

I have an Specialized Prevail. Probably the best fitting, lightest, and most vented helmet I've owned. I also have a Kali Maraka that comes in a close second.

I'd buy a Smith. Saw some on the interwebs and they look good, or as good as a helmet can.

That's why our MUP has some protective fences where it passes a golf course.

Can I laugh? I feel like it's OK to laugh because it doesn't sound like there was a concussion or any srs injury.

That's hilarious!!!

Glad you're OK.

I still dont wear helmet when cycling.

I did got hit by a insect right above my eye and it hurt so bad I thought it was a bee sting. If it hit right in my eye I dont know what would happen. I do wear glasses.

What else bad can happen?

Glad to know I am not the only one this has happened to...riding a MUP by a golf course, heard something in the branches in the tree above me, then got smacked in the glasses by a golfball. luckily the tree slowed it down enough that it didn't hurt much or break anything.

i rode over onto the fairway, and up to the tee where i told the offending golfer he needed to go to a driving range instead.

Hmmm... I can't think of anything else bad that could happen while riding without a helmet other than a large insect striking your face.

They're specifically designed to prevent insects from hitting your head (this is why the more expensive "aero" helmets have fewer holes), so the only real risk of not wearing a helmet at all is having a beetle or dragonfly possibly get tangled in your hair.

I disagree, although it's been years since I played. Very relaxing to throw back a few beers while driving a cart around and hitting that little ball hundreds of yards into a tiny hole. Great fun.

I will try to quote Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain as best as I can:

That's just it. You don't know *what* can happen and *when* it will happen. Two reasons enough for me to wear a helmet. Am sure that the OP would not be as happy without his helmet in this case as benign as it may seem. He would have a really nice welt on his head at the very least.
