How to Shower for a Ride (work, etc.)
I was turned onto opening up my dopamagenic pathways by a PT recently. Rather than a Scottish shower for greater health and wellbeing (i.e., alternating hot and cold or at least ending a hot shower with a blast of icy cold water), the latest research suggests we benefit by simply ending a hot shower with cold for 2-3 minutes. And, it doesn't have to be polar cold– a temperature of 68°F (likened to jumping into the ocean in southern California) is enough change to jump start the system. It may be a bigger challenge to adopt this practice later when winter arrives but so far, I've been enjoying the benefits over the last couple of weeks.

I would prefer drinking a cup of coffee to standing in a cold shower.

Sort of like a cup of coffee but… more like a Pacifico out of the ice chest with a fresh lime from a tree at the end of a dusty ride down the San Juan Trail to the bottom of the Santa Ana Mountains.

Does anybody besides me think we might be overthinking pre and post ride procedures? Even a little?

Should probably be illegal...
The mechanism that can probably explain the immediate mood-lifting effect of immersion in cold water or cold shower is probably the stimulation of the dopaminergic transmission in the mesocorticolimbic and nigrostriatal pathway. ~Nikolai Shevchuk

In my experience, the "mood-lifting effect of immersion in cold water or cold shower" comes when I get out.

I certainly don't do it for 2-3 minutes, but I do turn down the shower temperature shortly before getting out. Closes the skin pores so that when I dry myself off I stay dry instead of still sweating a little.

I turn it to cold water for a couple minutes before getting out...but only so I am warmer when I get out instead of freezing lol. It's not bad if you do it slowly over a minute or two.

For the, “significant decrease[s] in tension and fatigue and an improvement in mood and memory” or, the dopamine high?
