Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Brooks B17 or B17N?

For rides of 50+ miles and a seat position about four inches above the handle bars, Which Brooks saddle would the better the B17 or B17 narrow?

I don't believe the choice between those would be dependent on riding style, but on the shape of your tush. Either B17 vs the Team Pro would be dependent on position.

But I'm just some guy on the internet

I have a B17 Imperial on my Domane and ride metrics/centuries on it. My seat and bars, however, have maybe an inch and a half separation.

They say that the B17 is for a more upright position, and I've found it to be too wide for the position you describe. Never tried a B17 narrow, but I love my C15, and my Team Pro.

+1

Get yer ar$e measured.
Mine has 97 mm between the centers of the sitbones (measured by multiple methods within 2001 - 2016 with the same result), and I am happy with a B17 Narrow ridden for about 6000 miles thus far, set up @ 40 mm above my handlebars.

Get the regular B17 if you measure 110+ mm.

Per my experience, if you are a lightweight rider (< 155 lbs) and the B17N fits you, be prepared for about 1100+ miles of mildish discomfort during the courtship period until saddle and ar$e ultimately "bond" together.
Both Brooks and many B17 users say the regular is less stiff and takes shorter time/distance to get broken in.

My understanding is that as a rider takes a more aggressive posture, the pelvis rotates forward, off of the ischial tuberosities and onto the pubic rami, which are narrower.

So, the same person in the drops with a 4 inch saddle to bar drop may need a narrower saddle than is indicated by measuring the sit bones.

I've put about 1000 miles on a B17N. It's more comfy when riding in an aggressive position. If I rode more upright I'd probably go with the regular B17.
