Wheel problem?

Clicking noises (similar to what loose spokes would make) emanate from the rear wheel area both when I coast (freewheel) and turn the crank. The spokes are OK. A bike mechanic said it could be the freehub ( I have a shimano cassette). Could a freehub make noise even when the chain is engaged?
