I know this is 50+, but what about 65+?

How are you 50++++ riders getting stronger? Any training tips for a 66 year old whose back 8 months after a long hiatus? Been riding 60-80 miles a week and I'm close to riding as strong as I did 20 years ago. My endurance is pretty good, but I want to increase my speed.

Thoughts?

I'm "only" 63 but what works for me to increase speed is intervals. No, not fun, very mentally as well as physically difficult, but yes they still work at my advanced age!

This is proof that Sticky threads have the opposite of their intended function.

Weights and plyometrics in the gym and hard intervals on the trainer and rollers set at the time, speed and power goals you want to achieve.

Ride . . . ride . . . ride some more.
Ride against the clock ( time trial ) for 1 full hour once a week.
Ride the same route and keep track of your speed and time.
Was doing that well into my 70s.
Am now 81 and guess I've become a bit of a slacker as I ride only 100+ miles a week, year round, but not longer concerned about 'how fast' I ride.
Pedal on!

Hmm!!

So, I started a 65 - 85+ thread many years ago - and it, apparently, is sort of invisible. Sad about that, and, yes, stickies sometimes defeat their purpose.

TT intervals help but for pure speed I believe you need to do long hard rides in the peloton. If the rides are fast enough you will get dropped. Hang on as long as you can. The next time you will go further. After a few of these rides you will be able to stay with them. I still remember not believing you could do 40 mph for short periods.
Now I m in my 70's and am lucky to reach 40 downhill.

Intervals as was suggested and also find a group of faster riders who are willing to wait when you get dropped.
Plenty of people your age going fast and racing. Good luck!

My wife is within 18 mos. of age 65, and I am about 3 months behind her.

So far, so good.

So change it to 60+ and it doesn't overlap. Fits me as well.

I'm still a big fan of single speed training. Hills require power, long declines teach you cadence. And it's so elegant feeling --no shifts or dancing chains. Love riding my single speed on my favorite 30 mile workout route.

Stickies are good when there are only a few, when you get more then 4 or 5, people quit looking at them. Maybe it's time to trim the herd...

Crank up the miles to 150-160. Increase your Cadence.

Join a local club and try to stay up with the fast riders.

My speed started increasing when I finally picked a tough steep hill and started doing 7 to 10 repeats on it once a week, during the riding season. By working the hill hard my speed has increased. I know, it does not make sense, but it happened.

Draft someone faster than you and you will go faster (at least until you hit a long hill).

+1 When I can get myself to do one TT a week I find that I get faster at any distance. My TT is 17.5 miles and I find it to be a lot of fun.
