Forum seems to drag down performance... Or is it just me?

On multiple machines, multiple browsers, different operating systems. This forum seems to lock up my computers. Win10, Linux, Chrome, Firefox, Edge... But surprisingly, never my Android devices.

Are you running decent performance computers, or old slow computers?

Are you running the latest versions of the browsers?

Various machines. Less than 6 months old to 4 years old. All updated OS and browsers. I'm kind of particular about that and backups...

If you were running a full carbon aero browser you’d be at least 30 milliseconds faster. Have you done an FTP or ping test on your ISP recently? Make sure you do a full spin down at least every 2 weeks, or more often if you’re moving your laptop around. Try tubeless. Much faster.

Same here, except computers are mostly new and powerful. It doesn't matter - this forum is awful for computer performance, it is just that you'll notice it faster on a slower machine. RAM and CPU hog. I think it is because of the big amount of ads, and not just ads with static images but with video, audio and other dynamic content. Even Facebook is better. Unfortunately, there is nothing to be done about this short of installing an ad blocker. I recommend restarting your browser after visiting this forum - this will make computer faster instantly.

BTW, it was even worse before, it became slightly better in the recent months.

Same experience here.... The forum loads slowly and after reading it for a while and then leaving to go to other sites, they too will load slowly until I eventually leave the internet for awhile and come back later. This is true both on my home computer and here at the office. I think it's just a characteristic of how this particular forum software works..... I'm on another forum - a travel-related forum called flyertalk.com, which behaves EXACTLY the same way, and it uses the same forum software as this one.

The worst performance comes from reading long, multiple-page threads. You have to scroll and scroll and then it sort of morphs from Page 1 to Page 2 to Page 3, etc, but every time it jumps to the next page there is a long delay and then it jumps way ahead and you have to scroll back. It happens here and it happens on the other forum I mentioned too.

I agree! Too much time on BF and not enough time riding.

I haven't noticed a problem here (running linux Xubuntu-18). Perhaps as @Troul suggests, it is third-party ads slowing things down? If you have a paid membership, the ads disappear.

Facebook, OTOH, regularly freezes up for me.

Paint one of the computers red(make sure it's really expensive paint), blow dry the paint with a really expensive floor pump..cuz that matters..to some, reboot, and try it out..if it's still slow, then it's you..somehow.

fwiw.. all my computers are old or really old. All run Win 10 updated to the latest installs, all run ad blockers, all load BF fast without any issues.

Now if I can just avoid BF-sponsored spam emails about bananas cleansing my gut and growing hair on my head..I'll be fine.

agreed..but, sadly, paying doesn't exempt one from being the product.

As far as BF is concerned it does. I’m not being subjected to any of the advertising that BF sells to fund the site.
BF is doing a far better job, others I subscribe to are limiting ad’s but are not stopping them entirely like BF.

As a frequent user, a paid subscription is well worth the cost to me.

All the best

Barry

BF if you’re listening, you might try giving a trial week ad free at a stated post level or account age.

I have the same problem with my Apple computers and less of a problem with my PC. I just got a new Mac Mini at Xmas and I have a problem with this site using a lot of memory and being slow. I also get a message on my Safari browser that says that this site is slowing down my computer.

I suspect at least some of the slowdowns are caused by this ISpy thing. Especially when you refresh the page or go back to it, and you have 15 new threads slowly popping to the top, one at a time. And then you click on a thread a millisecond too late, and turns into a completely different thread. Maddening.

We recommend Chrome for the best site performance. CCleaner is also a great app for speeding up performance in general.

For Mac/Safari users: When you get the significant energy message, check the Activity Monitor. If "Disnoted" appears select it and Force Quit. After a while, the fan slows down and things return to normal. Quitting Disnoted does not seem to have any adverse impact. It will return in a few days to repeat the cycle.
