Aluminum/steel gravel frame suggestions

Hey all,

This is my first post, happy to be a part of the community! I recently had my bike wrecked. Someone tried to steal it and was unsuccessful, and in doing so damaged the frame beyond repair. Wheels, tires, groupset are all salvageable.

But i need a frame!... looking for a good aluminum gravel frame to purchase. I found a company named RIDEWILL on ebay that seems to have a great selection (and the price is pretty attractive too). However they tell me they are out of stock until October.

Can any of you direct my attention to a good aluminum/steel frame manufacturer? Im not too concerned about looks, this frame is just something to bang around on. Trying to keep it under $600 US.

Thanks

There are a lot of manufactures selling gravel bikes but don't know as many selling bare frames

off the top of my head check out the following companies for just frames

Soma
Surly
Velo Orange

Sorry to hear about your bike!
Have you considered a hardtail mountain bike conversion? Might help stay in your budget since you'd only need to swap a few parts over.

What was the old bike? 26" wheels, 700?, 6 speed?, 10 speed? Caliper brakes? V brakes? PF BB, Threaded?
Components aren't necessarily compatible across all framesets.

A couple other bikes you might want to research are Ritchey and Cannondale.

You should be able to find a really nice used aluminum or steel frame set for $600. What area are you located?

they supply companies like Richey & Cannondale and many more familiar brand names..

If you want a thousand or so they are there to serve

Merida and Giant also have dealers for the bikes they make under their own brand name..

Being in Canada makes shipping from the USA problematic due to costs. I really cannot comment on availability or price of used in Winnipeg or any of Canada.

This sucker is nice, through axles though, and unfortunately out of stock

Bike Nashbar looks to have frames in stock, but the only ones in your price range are the surly and soma units

Niner sells just the frame for their RLT, one of my dream bikes, but the price of the frame exceeds what I normally pay for a whole bike

You should be able to find a used complete bike for something similar to your price range, maybe slightly above. Then switch across the parts you want to keep and put what's left on eBay.

If you only go complete frame, you're restricted in terms of compatibility (ie, you can't go with something that's a different wheel, brake, headset, or BB type), whereas if you buy a complete bike, you can keep the bits that don't cross over, and add the bits that you like.

For example, here's a Marin Gestalt in a 56 for $1,000;
https://govvelo.com/products/marin-g...hoCIbIQAvD_BwE

Sell the Sora shifters, derailleurs and cassette on eBay, plus whichever wheelset of the 2 you don't want, plus bars, stem, crankset. You might even come out ahead of your $600 budget.

Edit to add; even if you don't sell it all, you'll have whatever's left as spares (eg, tyres and tubes, possibly cables), which is never a bad thing.

Your bike is quick release, you're in luck.

eBay has about a zillion QR models in steel and aluminum. The most expensive ones are $600 and $150 is pretty common. Search "gravel frame".

Winnipeg has bike shops, doesn't it? what brand lines do they carry?

"Gravel" is a new Niche Market .. Most companies want a slice of that ..

Nothing fancy, but way below your budget and seems to fit your requirements:

Thank you for the help everyone, fantastic feedback.

I ended up going with ridewill. They have a fantastic selection. Shipping took forever (pandemic) and i have yet to build this up. I will report back with review.
