...and want's to get rid of them. Most of them are classic swiss 3-speeds followed by english ones. Two former car mechanic shops, one house and one barn full of bikes and parts. I ended up buying only 3 stems and a chainwheel. This was to much n+1 for me *lol*.

The pictures show about one third of the bikes and 1% of the parts.

Like collecting pennies and someone shows up with a water jug full to go through. What did they originally have planned for them?

At some point, many, many bikes ago it became more about having than using. I hope I never get to that point. However, I would like to go see a place like that.

You lie.

That's not Switzerland.

That's @nlerner's bike cave. Looks like he cleaned up a lot since I was there.

That gives me the heebie jeebies. I have 7 bikes, 8 extra wheels, and one cardboard box full of bike parts, and that's enough

The guy is a former car mechanic and, according to people who know him, 4 years ago it was full of car parts and no bikes.

His plan is to sell all of them. He asks between 50 and 400 swiss franks. Depending on shape and „collector value“ (based on his opinion).

Mostly "townie" bikes and maybe some tourers.
don't recognize anything to be really that "collectible", but I guess it would be fun to dig around that place and possibly find a few "hidden jewels".
There was something posted not too long ago about a guy in Asia, somewhere (Thailand or Malaysia?) That had a whole warehouse full of much more exotic bikes (mostly 80'S Euro race bikes, IIRC) than these.......
That would be a place I would like to visit too.

Haha, right now it works like this: „Hi, knock yourself out, do you have a flashlight?“
In some of the rooms it‘s pitch dark and there is space for exactly one foot at a time in between the bike rows. Funny thing is, the guy seems to know every bike: „a yeah the 1961 allegro without a handlebar back there. I have the original bar down at the other garage. Can you check it out while it‘s still back there? Then if it fits we‘ll pull it out, won‘t take us longer than 15 min“ *lol*.

A little curious how he got so many bikes, then letting these bikes get dusty.

Me too, me too. There is a lot of abandoned bikes standing around in Switzerland. After some time the authorities remove them from common ground and put them into storage for some defined time. If no one claims them until then they give them away. Guess (hope) he got them like this way, i didn't ask.

That's true from todays point of view. Back in the day those 3 speeds were considered tourers. They have pretty long wheelbases and can be packed heavily. People would ride them on multi day trips over passes in the alps. I'm doing it on present day and i find them perfect for the task (i'm cheating a little in using more teeth on the rear ).
