Brooks Competition Saddle?

I recently got this Brooks Competition leather saddle and am curious about it.

About when would this have been made?

How good a saddle is it? Used for racing by Pros?

Any other markings on the side skirts besides the Brooks Competition?

That markings are pretty faint.

What's the approximate value of one of these new?

Thanks and cheers

IDK , did you look up what a Brooks team professional sells for.. now.. that would be the go to today..

More Eroica than the current racers.. too heavy for them..

That is one uncomfortable looking saddle. So narrow.

Anyways, here's some search results. Start digging. saddle search results

I see on the underside on the rear plate:

PAT. NO. 66207 and also an A with 60 under that A.

Is that a date code? If so when?

Thanks again.

Cheers

The saddle was made in 1960 (60 stamped on the underside of frame)...

I have no idea of value, but know one thing for sure. It was used on a genuine racing bike that was raced. And I know another thing for sure - it is NOT comfortable!

It looks like the rear plate was intentionally bent in. Not an OEM saddle job?

I'd call that a sprinters saddle, for track use.

Nice.
I wonder if that will work if the tension bolt is at it's end...

No harm in trying though :-)

I was going to ask about that cross-member on the rear underside of this saddle I have.

Is that Brooks factory addition?

Cheers

I am not sure about the saddle bag mount. I did remove it and not sure if I saved it or not. I will check in my miserably disorganized parts stash and see if I kept it or not. Hope so and if you want it, let me know. I would be happy to send it to you.

That formed bracket, clipped to the saddle rails, is a nice period piece that helped hold a spare tubular tire under the saddle. I have one too. The trouble was that the missing pieces we're a pair of elastic bands to secure the tubular (today we'd use bungee cords) and a "ring thing" that clipped those cords to the hook on the right side. The trouble was those elastic bands were as good as all elastic bands back then so they hardened and fell off into a ditch. For me the challenge is to fabricate something to serve as that "ring thing". Meanwhile mine just flops in a box somewhere like Randy's does.

Hi Randyjawa. That'd be neat.

I was wondering about that round cross member closest to the upside down 60 and if it was originally added at the Brooks factory?

Also, does the 'A' indicate a January production month forthat saddle?

Cheers

I really don't know. The piece looked more like a cobbed up piece of number 9 haywire, but I could certainly be wrong. This is what was mounted to the saddle and I just might put it back on when/if I get the bike working properly...

Thanks. That's nice to know.

So this saddle was made between January and March in 1960. That makes it slightly over 40 years old. I guess it's safe to call it Classic & Vintage. LOL

This is the part that I'm wondering if it's original to the saddle?

Or is it to help hold on the tubular tire?

Or is it something someone put on in order to attach the tool pouch?

Thanks to all who've take an interest in this.

Cheers

Yeah that looks like an implement of torture. In the 80's I tried several Brooks Pro's and tho they were each slightly differently shaped none of them were my shape. OTOH the Ideale 90 always felt like it was made just for me. Even now I have one of the titanium framed 90's on the one Masi.

The images I posted in my OP were take with a Canon PowerShot SX120 IS camera and are as a result have a bit of a wide angle distortinon to them. The saddle isn't all that much longer or wider than some other saddles I find comfortable.

Need to decide which bike to try this Brooks Competition on.

I'd still like to know if that round piece under the leather and joining the two saddle rails is original or not.

Cheers

Today I PUT That Brooks Competition saddle on my 1984 MIELe Beta and I lOVE it! It's perfect for me.

Now I', very tempted to remove the N600 shifters, front derailleur, non-index rear derailleur and put on my First INdex Dura Ace components and perhaps swap to over the bar cable N600 brake levers for Shimano Aero ones.

Cheers
