How fast are your solo rides?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This was Dec 7th, a solo ride on the second day of the Escape to the Keys ride that we do in SoFla. I know it's not blazing fast compared to some guys here but I have been riding for two years (barely) so being able to do this on my own made me pretty happy...

I don't go all out all the time, usually out of say 5 days a week that I ride there will be one or two days when I will average 16-17mph for 4-50 miles. Then there are days when I work on keeping it above 21 for he entire ride with occasional faster stretches above 25 while keeping cadence right around 100-110. This has seemed to work for me.
man that must have been a pretty scenic route.

Scenic and dangerous. I grew up in Miami so I've driven down there many times, and I can't imagine what it is like to ride on US1 with traffic on some of those bridges. Scary.

oh baby!

looks like they have some very generous shoulders. And when in doubt, jump in the water and swim to the nearest island

It was kind of weird that day. There were some spots when heading sw when I actually ran into some strong crosswinds. I think the last 20 miles were a bit easier because by then it was mostly heading west but it didn't feel like the wind was helping me much.

That's one thing about those roads, they do have pretty wide shoulders. But I did ride on the road whenever there were two lanes. And it sure is a beautiful ride any way you look at it!

must be expensive to keep that road maintained, with all the hurricanes you get. also, on the road on the right, there are a couple of junctions, which I'm assuming is where boats pass through. How does traffic work there?

The road on the right is no longer used and is broken in places. If you follow it on Google Earth you will see what I mean. Luckily we haven't had a hurricane since the end of 2005 (cross my fingers!).

The story of the construction of the original railway in the early 1900s along that route is fascinating, and involves lots of hurricanes. I read a book about it a few years back called "Last train to paradise", worth a read.

I ride as fast as I can to work and back home. And I ride as fast as I can on my weekend ride. I've improved from 17 mph to about 21 now. i still don't like the idea of getting clip-in pedals and shoes though.

I have the opposite problem.
When I'm riding solo I tend to go too fast.
Going too fast too soon in the season isn't good for an athlete.
I learned that the hard way and now I joined a club to be able to do longer and more relaxed rides.

How long have you been doing it this way?

I live in southern Dorchester County, Maryland, and ride the Eagleman and Chesapeake trialthlon routes, this is all flat and open and very windy from all directions. I did five rides this year, with winds at 15mph+ at a average of 15mph. on a calm day or a day with winds under 10mph I can get about 20-23 mph

Solo rides, how fast? Not very.

But that's the wrong question, the question should be how hard.. (at least if you're training)
