New Bike Day! Plus, a request for wheel recommendations

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Bike Day! Plus, a request for wheel recommendations

Picked up a Focus Mares 105 for CX racing and road riding. Love the bike so far. Looking for a second set of wheels for on the road. Kind of wanted to keep wheel budget around $500...had been looking at some of the alloy disc wheels from Hunt that are around 1500 grams, but not particularly aero. The shop I bought the bike from has got a set of the previous generation of Mavic Cosmic Carbones wheelset/tire combo they're willing to sell me for $900. Wondering if it would be smart to stretch for those wheels? Any thoughts and/or recommendations? Pic during maiden voyage below.

I'd go searching for a Shimano set, similar to the RS81.. I know they make a similar wheel for disc brake bikes..It's a rock-solid wheelset and they won't break the bank.

Not sure on the wheels, but the bike looks great - love the red tape. Enjoy!

Hah. well that is the plan for CX use. But I'd like to get a set for road use as well as this bike will be doing pretty much everything except bad weather/loaded commuting.

Nice CX bike. I'd get the Hunt wheels. If I were going to spend $900 I'd get a custom set with White Industries hubs and alu rums.

This may be a bit of a silly question...but are hubs really all that imprtant? Seems like they shouldnt have mucb of an effect on performance, given the massive amount of leverage the rim exerts on the hub, and the centralized location of weight. I've been sort of focysing my decision on the rim itself...

Pawl engagement is important to some. The WI T11 has 48 points of engagement.

And ultralight hubs can be flexy and prone to breakage.
Stick to hubs that are generally well regarded. Which is most hubs.

Sharp looking bike! Maybe not the best road tires though, two sets will be real convenient.

Hubs are important. Get good hubs and they will outlast this set of wheels.

If I were going to stretch for a set of wheels in the $1k region, it wouldn't be the Mavics. I'd rather get something like the Reynolds Assaults (which I own) or similar.

Another one that looks pretty sweet, seeing as you'd previously said that you were looking for something more aero, are these guys from November - https://novemberbicycles.com/collect...disc-aivee-mp2

November seems to think very, very highly of those hubs and the rim specs look the part (46mm deep, 28.5mm wide ext, 21.5mm wide int). 1560g for the pair. Even with a nice set wheels already in hand, these guys are tempting to me.

I would pass on Reynolds wheels... they are all old V shape tech and the world has moved on to U shape wheels because they handle much better in cross winds.

(feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, and Reynolds has updated their products)

A couple of their products, like the Aero 46, use pointy, V-shaped rims, but the Assaults, among others, have been more U-shaped for a couple generations; they are not at all ornery in the wind.

Maybe Campagnolo Zonda disc wheelset for $600?

wiggle.com | Campagnolo Zonda C17 Disc Brake Wheelset (Bolt Thu CL) | Road Race Wheels

But don't know if bolt through CL is ok for you or not? Or the Fulcrum Racing 5 LG for $585 which might be similar:
