So far I have found minimal maintenance to work the best.

The more cleaning and oiling you do, the more the drive train seems to pick up grime.
The chain is always very well greased from the package, just add some dry lube once a week and you'll be good for many months.

A dry chain with just a bit of grease on it will minimize the dirt and sand that can stick.

The internet certainly doesn't have enough posts pointing out that WD40 is mostly solvent carrying a small amount of light oil.
For real though, it's actually pretty good for a few things where both dissolving contaminated lubricates and freeing up parts requiring lubrication is needed, like on shifters with gummy pawls. This should be followed up by a more significant lubricant.

Any solvent should be washed away with soapy water and then fresh lubricant should be applied.
