New Derailleurs that look Vintage.

As the title says what new or newer derailleurs have that classy vintage look to them. CF and black painted AL just don’t do it. Most of the real vintage stuff has plenty of scars to show and probably worn out pivots. I love Campy that is until they went to the super ugly aesthetic on Chorus and up. Just when I thought Shimano had ugly all wrapped up Campy stepped in show they could do ugly better. That and asymmetrical 4 arm cranksets set new standards for ugly.

Back to the original question Andy suggestions? It’s going to be friction so I don’t care about indexing or brinfters.

My 9 speed tiagra derailleur looks alright. Not vintage because it isn't blocky, but it's at least silver and shiny.

I can add that the 10 speed Shimano Tiagra (4600 series) in silver looks "right" also.

Rivendell Bikes sells the Shimano Altus that is 7-8 speed indexed or up to 9 friction. https://www.rivbike.com/collections/...-rd-m310-17167

With its overall silver with a black panel, if I squint real hard, it is not that far from my old Shimano 600 Arabesque. I have no idea where it falls in the current Shimano lineup, but with the low price is is basic. Given what I have seen locally at yard sales (or on trash night), you might be able to pickup a whole bike with a nice recent silver derailleur for the cost of a derailleur alone (free if a trash put out). When the kids give up biking or move the parents want the bikes gone FAST (and often cheap). It also seems if a component fails, many just buy a new bike. It makes you wonder how many C&V bikes from this era will be around in 20 years.

The Campy Veloce in silver looks modern classic.as does theMicroShift RD-R47 Rear Derailleur - 9 Speed,

This isn't correct. Mounds of old derailleurs out there that work just fine. Plenty of NOS ones that are still cheaper than a new modern derailleur.

The closest a new derailleur can get to "vintage" looking is being silver. There's nothing really out there that actually looks vintage beside the real stuff.

I personally don't think derailers where the parallelogram plate isn't the inner part of the pivot on both sides look retro. However those $10 Sunrace steel derailers do look vintage.

Huh. I fully overhaul and polish my campy and suntour derailleurs, and they look and work like new.

You are right! I have no experience with Sun derailleurs but a lot with Microshift and they work flawlessly.
On the other hand I agree with those who prefer polishing the mechs, I also do it.

I hate painted black crap.
Campy Centaur still comes in silver, but the Derailleurs are two-toned.
Can't go wrong with Shimano 7800/7803.

(As Bill in Va said) Don't overlook the silver Shimano Tiagra 4600 GS. This is compatible with 8, 9 and older 10-speed shifters including 5600 and 6600 series.

It will take a 32 cog and work with doubles or triples. This is a very affordable and very functional derailleur for everyday-rider vintage bikes. It might not be as elegant as vintage Campagnolo, but it's more versatile and better engineered.

I recall this member who polished up a recent-issue 105 that turned out great. Here is a link to his thread, and the pics below are his, not mine.

None - everything made in the last 25 years looks hideous in my opinion!

Huge, grossly misshapen, with exaggerated 'speed' curves, extra lumps & holes... They should be banished to a forgotten island!

Particularly awful is this 'stretched on the screen' style so popular today (on automobiles too, esp. all their headlights that /must/ look like they're a hunk of elastic holding Wile E. Coyote from a cliff, and c-pillar windows that /must/ come to a point). Bedazzlement with computer programs and constant need for exaggeration of last year's shape has replaced functional elegant design that respects the materials, manufacturing efficiency, and durability.

Derailleurs for millions of years looked like what they did (move chains to slightly different planes); now they look like what everybody wants (the key, of course): loud, 'powerful', violent, and self-centred!

Even the Huret Duopar looks like a cat on a fence compared to anything recent. And don't get me started on the black anodizing!

Paraphrasing something I read somewhere by somebody, I miss things that look like they were designed with a french curve by a trained hand and mind and not on a video game by a high school kid on 'rockstar'!

Microshift gets a bad rap from the Shimano guys in particular. I guess they forgot when Campy was the only game in town. Shimano was basically the Microshift of their era.

Wow, except that I agree with everything that you said. Function first, then make it elegant. Swoops and bumps for the sake of nothing is not good design in my option as well. This all follows the Post Modern Architecture where buildings are designed from the outside in. And the style on the outside is not that good either.
