Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Velominati rules have always been dumb, but I like having them around because breaking rules is fun.

Phil sounds like a guy that doesn't like having fun.

One actually important point I agree with though: Pedestrians before bikes before cars. Period. Always.

Last Saturday Brandon McNulty waved to me while riding out to 7 Springs(part of his 5 hour training ride). If a pro can wave to a random cyclist, I can do the same.

Ideas do go over people's heads. He was not criticizing the original writing of the rules, which was a joke and for fun. His point was rather that people either (a) take it too seriously (b) aren't really taking it that seriously but come off that way to others, who thereby are put off by the apparent elitist attitudes.

Maybe that point went over *your* head? Or you got it, but think that your fun is more important? As in, "If people can't take a joke, that's their problem??

The Venn diagram of people who think Phil can't take a joke and people who can't take Phil's jokes is one circle.

He's a tool bag.

Worry less about what others think, and ride more.

Plenty of room to come up with your own ****luminati rules.

Those seems a bit saccharin but it's it's easier to criticize than produce something.

Here's one:

Spend more time riding than looking at BF.

May as well tell the typical member on here to sprout wings and take flight. By my estimation, a healthy-sized chunk of the active posters on this forum do not ride bicycles at all.

The bit about littering was amusing. Otherwise, it wasn't worth the three minutes. If his delivery is supposed to be humorous, it's lost on me.

Even though I have never met him, I like Phil. Seems to me like a good guy that I would be happy to ride with any day. That is, if he didn't drop me...

I personally hate when people host popular/fun cycling events, contribute to meaningful charities, and organize volunteer road cleanups, so I can totally see why people don't like the guy.

Maybe, just maybe, both Velominati and Philuminati rules are for fun. We all likely take ourselves too seriously. I, clad in my Assos kit, perched on my Cippollini RB 800 complete with SRAM Red eTap, sprinting for my life for the town limit sign in the Tuesday and Thursday evening World Championship club rides am the “Fred” we pass going the opposite direction on his 28 year old, 7 speed, rusted out department store special. I am him. He is me. Let us all rejoice that we have not given up and taken up golf. Discuss.
