Replacing 8 Alfine to standard derailleur

Hi all!

I have an opportunity of buying Focus Planet 2.0 TR with alfine 8 shifter but some of the gears don't work (4. and 6.). As this shifter is kinda exotic I am considering of replacing internal alfine to regular Shimano (LX, XT, deore, etc.) shifter. Is this even possible? Without any trouble. You can see pictures of bikes

I don't see any RD hanger. So it will take some design and fabricate to cobble one. Or a cheap claw RD . Also i'm not sure if you have all the cable stops for a conventional RD.

So short answer. NO!

Go to a LBS and service that hub. it might need some tuning of the shifter, or a bit of lube in some sticky areas. Much cheaper and less hassle to just service that alfine hub/shifter. And if the hub is toast, better get another internal geared hub.

That looks to be a nice bike specfically setup for an IGH. I'd just repair or replace the IGH rather than try to retrofit a derailleur.

None of these are show-stoppers, but I agree that repairing the hub would be my choice.

low end RD coming with or add on claw steel hangers go on axle end..

quite a kludge and PITA when you get a puncture..

IJoin the chorus send the wheel out for service, if Local is not willing...
or bump up to the Alfine 11*, or a lateral move to a Nexus 8.

*Di2 kit for those..

It looks like the bike has a unique sliding rear dropout.

It also appears to have a single cable housing the entire length from the bars to the IGH hub. That likely could be used with a derailleur cable, although the long housing would be suboptimal.

For the droput, I'd really consider fabricating a new right dropout, or perhaps welding a derailleur hanger to the dropout. A "claw" and vertical dropouts would be just a mess.

Or, you could contact Focus and see if they sell derailleur style dropouts for the bike.

Oh, some come with a belt drive, and some with a chain drive. A belt would be a mess with shifters. A chain drive might be OK.

Anyway, I'd agree with others... WHY? There are millions of hybrid bikes out there already with standard derailleurs. What would the Focus give you that another bike wouldn't?

If you already had the bike, that would be one thing, but you're wishing to buy it as a project bike for which you still have to acquire a wheel, cassette, derailleur, shifter, perhaps new brake levers, new chain, and new cables and housings. Plus acquiring or fabricating the derailleur hanger.

That is a lot of work for a project bike.

Why not just fix the Afline, it's not 'exotic' by any means, any good LBS should be able to have a look and diagnose the issue.
