Built a wheel today

Yup. Took me 3-4 hours, and I had to start over a couple times, but I got it. It is straight as an arrow, perfectly round, and the spokes evenlly tight. It is nothing special, just a cheap steel wheel we had laying around. So I took it apart and started from scratch. Next I think I might try building a set of wheels for my MTB.

Build some for me Fubes! Disc brake hubs please.
I've never attempted that particular feat yet. Maybe someday. Congrats Fubey!

Send me the parts dude.

It isn't as hard as I expected it to be, it just took some patience and attention to detail, as well as developing a system. A truing stand is an absolute must, duh.

and the spokes evenlly tight
Ok. Ya got them evenly tight but did ya get them tight enough?
Would ya ride on them?

Gets frustrating the first time, huh?

Actually, yes. I compared it to a wheel a friend of mine had built and mine was comparable. But he built his in half the time it took me.

OK, now for the real test-go to the closest steep hill, stop at the bottom, then hammer up it as hard as you can. How many "plinks" do you hear? If it's fewer than 3, the wheel is good.

There is nothing quite so satisfying as
riding on a bike that you built, on wheels that
you laced up.

Good on ya Fubar.
