We took the tandem out today for about 46 miles. It was chilly, not from the cold but from the wind. Yeah, it was windy.

LOL. Ill have to try hahdah next time. I went out this morning for 25 miles sans bar mitts. It was mid-lower 40’s, mostly. There was lots of fog that when I pedaled into it the temp dropped what felt like 10*. My glasses fogged up instantly leaving me to claw them off as fast as I could before riding into a tree. To add insult I felt the back end getting squirly leaving me to think I had a flat. I pulled over to squeeze the back tire only to find my foot slipping. It was black ice. Ugh. It was a slow ride. I left at 0600 and got home at almost 0800, just in time for the sun to start drying the pavement. I never thought id want my studded tires when it’s forecasted for mid 40’s.

Those look warm! Cold hands always force me back inside before anything else. I did get out for a ride today because I couldn't waste this weather. With a hat under my helmet, gloves, tights and wool socks, I was fine. Probably could have used a windbreaker too.
Took my husband's bike out for a spin since I'm in the market for a new bike and he expects me to get what he has (Trek FX3). It was an upgrade over my current one, but not really what I'm looking for. Glad I got to try it out so I know that I don't want it.

Yesterday morning I had Saturdays phantom flat tire on my mind. Enough so that within a half mile of leaving home on my cross bike I was startled by a load dramatic bike shaking pop. I walked home and pulled the tire to find a 1/3” gash in the tube and tire. I must have ran over a small sharp rock or maybe glass. I was really squeezing every penny out of those 38mm Bontrager CX0’s. I put over 2500 road miles on them. They rolled nicely but had no flat protection what so ever. I got a lot of flats this year with them. I didn’t feel like swapping in the studded tires yet especially since it was not icy. I grabbed my hefty 520 touring bike and rode it for 25 miles instead. Later in the day I mounted the studded tires onto the cross bike where they will stay until spring time. I also got my Soma Smoothie road ready by taking off the trainer tire and skewer so I can take it out when needed. I still don’t want to get the Seven dirty yet.

Well, the name of the thread says "today" but I rode both today and yesterday. Is it okay if I mention both?
Today's ride was just a commute, cool crisp air with a moderate tailwind in the ride in, slightly warmer yet damper air with a headwind on the ride home early afternoon. Very light traffic. I wonder why. Is today some special day or something?
Yesterday was 50 miles on a new build, a 1977 Gazelle Champion Mondial. Cool, windy but otherwise quite a nice day. This Gazelle is quite different from my '86, stiffer and quicker to steer, very Italian-ish. At least I think so. It is also my only solo bike with a trip crankset.

Hey Rum, I think I like them. I have only used them for 2 rides totaling 45 or so miles. the first time I used my old Novara lobster claw gloves that I normally only use for "city riding" on my hybrid or tour bike for short rides like running errands and shopping. I think they were overkill with the bar mitts. My hands were way warmer than I expected. So much so that they were sweating and clammy. The second time I used some thinner gloves that I normally only use in the 40's-50's. Again this combination was warmer and sweatier than expected. I realized that those combo's were way overkill. next time Ill try no gloves or summer gloves. I think once I figure out the best arrangement Ill really take to them.

Happy New Year all!! Keep the awesome pictures coming and I hope to see you all on the road! I made some changes to my Smoothie. I pulled the too wide Brooks C17 brown saddle and replaced it with the Bontrager Paradigm Ti saddle from my R3. It was an overdue swap. I also tossed the brown bar tape and switched to black bar tape to match better. I took it out New Years Eve for a 25 mile spin and it was a welcomed improvement. the C17 proved to be too wide and uncomfortable in the long run.

haven't really "needed" winter cycling gloves yet this year even in the mid to high 20s. when I did use them, I swapped mid-ride to thinner or nothing.
this night was pretty cold & after a solid hr in the 20s I was sipping my hot water & honey. but only needed my thin windstopper gloves
when I first used them this year due to a nasty raw rain day I used only glove liners.
so for those who are accustomed to cold weather riding with winter gloves, we have a quandary. gloves & no barmitts or barmitts & no gloves. & under what conditions do we use barmitts with gloves, & with what gloves. & do the barmitts make our lives easier or more complex? but there is one thing we can rely on, that no matter what New England weather throws at us, we'll be ready.
I especially appreciate them in the rain. no more soggy gloves that take a week to dry!
on a cool fall day where I can still ride in shorts the barmitts let me enjoy a long ride w no gloves
if I want to changeup my position, I just ride the tops, they still provide a wind block. if the gloves are too thick this can help keep hands a comfy temp w/o getting too warm. if they get cold just go back under cover
until it gets bad, even if I need warm windproof clothing I can still ride bare handed

got out in the rain with my barmitts & new helmet cover. another benefit of the barmitts is, they make a nice protected cave for gloves when you stop
decided 1/2 way to switch from faceshiled to helmet cover
