Barrel adjusters or not?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

+1 and another thing to worry about on race day.

I don't get it. Why do you need them when most bikes have barrel adjusters at the cable stops on the down tube? Those are pretty accessible "on the fly."

You also have the barrel adjuster on the rear der for an even wider range of fine adjustment. Is a third barrel adjuster really necessary?

Pretty sure every Cervelo ever made has not had adjusters on the cable stops. My two certainly dont...

I think most people are talking about one set of adjusters. My Trek has them on the dt cable stops. My Cannondales do not. I only have the inline barrel adjusters on the Cannondales. All of my bikes have the older Shimano routing of the der cables. If I get the newer Shimano or SRAM I'm not sure how convenient the inline adjusters would be.

Some bikes don't have those:

As mentioned by others, many modern CF don't have them at the down tube.

My Giant doesn't.

My Merlin does. However, the barrel adjustors at the down tube in my experience are a bigger pain in the ass than the in line type. They tend to rust up and get hard to turn. When I rebuild the Merlin, I'm getting rid of the adjustors at the DT ad putting in line ones in.

I assumed those were included in this discussion.
