The French lady did RAAM on a Performer bike. Not too expensive and set up for aero.

Yeah, I would just go for a used Bacchetta Ti Aero. It will set you back $2000, but with titanium, you can't go wrong. They are not as fast as low racers, but way faster than a much more expensive road bike. I have passed professional racers on my bike, and have a bit of a tummy. On one moderately hilly course, I have managed 24.75 MPH average speed, and that is with a slow patch getting around some pedestrians.

You can get faster with the stick bikes with Carbon Aero etc... but I also wanted to tour with mine so having something I can load up is good too.
