Extremely subjective speed observations
None of this was done with a power tap. So, my best objective measure is how often I have been passed on the bike path over the years. I am the kind of silly person who uses other riders as a motivation (and ego boost) for going faster, so I sometimes try to keep up with people who pass me. On my average commute, I come across maybe 50 riders going to and from work. It is a slow bunch.
Birdy--occasionally passed by a Spandex racing type. Maybe 1-2 times per week. Once, doing loops in the park, I was passed very fast by two riders whilst I was going 22MPH. They must have been doing close to 30MPH. I was younger then, and in better shape.
Brompton--Daily. Sometimes by people who are not in Spandex at all. My averages must be about 15MPH, or 30% slower than the Birdy, but my legs are not acclimated to upright riding and I am not in as good of shape. I should mention that my favorite tires on the Birdy were Brompton Greens. I'm now using the similar standard Brompton tire. Can't say that the Brompton was slower than the Birdy, but subjectively seems to be.
Bacchetta Ti Aero (racing high racer recumbent with 650c HED wheels). Not yet "fairly" passed by anyone, anywhere. My day will come. I have had a few Spandex folks push me for long stretches up to 30 MPH, but they always fade away. Of course, there are many riders out there who can completely dust me on a child's BMX bike, but I haven't yet come across them. I am not convinced that recumbents are safe in traffic, particularly low racers. But I'm not in traffic much.

I'll race both of ya,...once I get my Swift w/NuVinci hub from the LBS. The front wheel is taking too long to get here!!!
Besides, I only average 15-25 mph. I'm no speed demon. I do pass most riders, but roadies are much faster than I care to compete with ATM. Maybe next year, when I pick out a cyclocross for training.
