Gitane Tour de France, mid 70s
SOLD.
Technical stuff: $85 plus shipping for a mid 70s Gitane Tour de France. The price includes headset, bottom bracket, centerpull brake hangers front and rear, downtube cable guide, and chainstay cable guide. I have not opened the headset but it turns smoothly. I overhauled the bottom bracket with new grade 25 ball bearings and fresh Park grease. The bearing surfaces show wear but they are smooth.
The frame is 63 cm C to C with a 60 cm top tube.
The frame is Reynolds 531 double butted 3 main tubes.
Rear drop out is spaced at 125 mm so it can take a 5 or a 6/7 speed rear wheel.
Drop outs are Huret honeycomb so it will take pretty much any rear derailleur.
Seatpost is 26.4.
There is a small tab brazed onto the downtube for the shifters.
The frame can take a pretty fat tire as it was set up with weinman 610 centerpulls and the pads were pulled pretty far down. It was originally set up with 27 inch wheels.
The good: It is a very neat vintage French bicycle. It has some nicks and scratches, as is common in older bicycles, but the frame is straight and there are no dings. The bike is a survivor. The lugs have nice windows with faint gold pin striping. I'd rate the overall condition as a 8 out of 10. This bike has clearly been stored inside.
The not as good: The bike has some scratches and there are areas where the paint looks a little thinner than it should be. There is a some scratching on the top tube and along the bottom bracket (where the downtube cable guide was). The rear brake bridge is seamed. The fork and rear triangle are likely hi tensile steel which is common when bikes are 3 main tubes Reynolds. The fork and rear triangle *might* be better quality Durifort tubing as I've seen a number of posts claiming this was this was the case with 3 tubes Reynolds Gitanes but there is no easy way of telling if this is the case or not.
If you buy the bike, I'll need to hunt down a big box! This is a large frame.

Thanks for letting me know about this! I think you're right--starting with a more complete bike with stretch my budget. But some day I'll add something like this to my collection...

Price drop. Large frames are tough to sell. I suspect I'll be building this frame up next Spring and selling it on the local CL. It will make someone a heck of a nice rider. This bike can take pretty fat tires.
