Universal Mod 77 Brake Hoods
Greetings all,
I am restoring a 1983 Bianchi Nuovo Racing 12v which has Universal Mod 77 levers which did not come with any hoods. I wanted to see if anyone has found a set that fit these levers well?
I know Cane Creeks expose part of the handle so are not a great fit. Perhaps Rustines or something similar?
Thanks!

I've had A'me "Modolo"-copy hoods on mod. 77 levers for many years. I suspect any Campagnolo-copy hood (Modolo, SunTour Superbe, Rustines, EAI, etc.) would also work.

Original Universal model 77 lever hoods are close to being unobtanium, except for a very few that come out from Italian sellers at eBay, once in a while. But the asking prices for them are quite high at about 65 bucks minimum. Quite a lot of money for hoods that are very thin and fragile and would dry rot quickly after you install them....

AFAIK, they've been out of production for at least a couple decades. Which is truly a shame, as they have proven to be the most durable hoods I've used. The hoods on those Universal levers are over 30 years old, with no cracking or blistering.

I tried finding Rustines that are explicitly for Universal levers but I can't see to find any other than the Campy/Weinmann/Mafac styles. I went ahead and ordered the Campy style Rustines - will update everyone on how the fit on Thursday.

Cocottes Universelles Rustines
Cocottes Universelles Rustines avec Embout + Molette
Also @chico81 ordered some universal replacements from an eBay vendor out of Italy I believe.

I'll wait to see how this works. You have to go to Rustine's website to order hoods for universal levers:

A'me hoods last long because I think, they are made from silicone compound, instead of latex based rubber that most hoods were made of. Another brand of hoods made from silicone material are the hoods from DiaCompe, from the mid 80's and later. I have DiaCompe Aero Grand Compe levers on one of my bikes which still have their original hoods from the mid 80's and they are still close to perfect, except for just friction wear from hands. The color had gone from white to just a bit off white, but they still clean up really nice with just Pledge spray polish and not one age crack or tear on them. See if you might be able to find mid to late Dia Compe equivalents that might fit your 77 levers. I suspect that most of their hoods might have switched over to the silicone material at that time.

The mod. 77 lever bodies are a different shape from the mod. 61/68 lever bodies, so depending on which model Universal level the Rustines have been designed for, the fit may or may not be proper. The mod. 77 lever body is close to the Campagnolo lever body shape (which is why the Modolo-style A'me hood worked well), so Rustines may not have bothered with a mod. 77 specific hood.
If someone tries these with mod. 77 levers, please report back.

"compatible avec les leviers de freins universelles Model S1, 68, 77 et 125."
I think that S1 is a typo and should be 61
Cocottes Universelles Rustines avec Embout + Molette
I tend to agree with John on this one, I think that Campy style hoods will be a better fit on the Mod 77 levers.
I remember BITD when nothing fit Universal 61/68 levers. Occasionally we'd some of the correct Univeral hoods in but they were always hard to find.

I'll pile on and also say those Mod 77 levers look like campy compatible to me. Post #2 would appear to prove it. The 61/68 levers look totally different. Way more square.
It was pretty common circa 1983 for most component companies to make their levers work with campy hoods. No shop wanted to stock 10 kinds of brake hoods. (shimano did their own thing, annoyingly)
