Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hello,

Read the title. What do you think? Can it still be Ultegra?

Yep, Ultegra, it's got the same logo (the three stripes).

Did anyone get my question? Sorry if you did not. I was asking, can the old Shimano 600 (now named Ultegra since 1998) be compared to any groupsets of today? If so, which one? Can anyone tell me about their performance?

How old is 'old'? Can my downtube friction shifting 6 speed Shimano 600 compare to my new brifter equipped index shifting 10 speed Ultegra? Uh....no. On the other hand, if the Ultegra proves as durable and reliable as the 600, I won't be replacing it in THIS lifetime.

EVERONE gets your question, I think. We just all think that the 600 stuff performs as well as modern Ultegra. Different? Sure, absolutely. But well-maintained 600 IMO is going to shift just as well as Ultegra, if you're not too dependant on brifters... and it's a hell of a lot less stealable, which means I can ride 600 on my commuter, where if I parked an Ultegra bike on the street all day, it wouldn't last a week.

+1. My old roadie is combo of 600 and old DA. Brokenrobot is right on the money.
