I'm still confused as to why a triple is such a bad thing on a climbing bike. If lower gears are meant for lower speeds and sitting and spinning is less taxing than standing up (which is all true) then why is a double the preferred crankset for climbing? Maybe we should be poking fun at all of the bikes bought by non-professionals that have doubles and make stupid comments like "oh, look at that climbing bike with a double. He probably can't climb a 2% grade on that thing." Then we can oooh and aaah at the real climbing bike a triple and talk about the 20% grades that guy must climb.
For the record, I have a LOOK 386 with AC 350 Sprint wheels, a triple, and a 12-27 cassette. I'm 26 and weigh about 157. Thank God I didn't have Competitive Cyclist build my bike.

Honestly I was just being sarcastic. The OP couldn't stand someone pairing a $3K wheelset with a triple. And in fact he was wrong. But you ride what you like and what suits your needs. Triples don't bother me at all but judgemental morons do.

Actually, this is really the only point of the thread that's worth consideration. It's interesting how many riders hold on an continue racing without contributing much to their local Jr. programmes. In our own efforts to recapture our youth, we often neglect mentoring/equipping/etc... the next generation of cyclists. Hopefully the purchasors of the two ultra-light granny geared triples have donated, loned, or sold their older bikes to younger riders at minimal cost.

Haha the VERY first one. The Pinarello Prince SL (Prime Alliance colour). Prime Alliance is the team my coach used to race for! How neat! Prime was a cool team.

It's not a bad thing at all, but in general for competitive cycling, if you're on the granny ring, you're off the back. The only solution is to work harder at climbing because there just aren't any shortcuts to getting strong going against gravity. For non-competitive riding it doesn't really matter. IMH experience, if I can't climb pretty much anything in a 39 x 21 (25 if it's really ugly steep and long), I'm not race fit. It might hurt alot, and I might puke, but if your not there on the crest, your race day is done. Remember, we're talking about pretty much anything...there are always exceptions. I think Ben was saying he had a 39 x 27 for the classic tour climbs in the Alps.

Jealousy is a root of elemental socialism/leftism. This nonsense is not surprising from a person located in a land with a long history of warped ideologies.

Jeannie Longo rode the Tour de France for women, the Tour de Feminin mountain stages on a triple, and I guarantee she could still drop anyone who has posted on this thread.

Go figure...I'm probably in that little corner that you might paint as "liberal". Leave the irrelevent political jabs home, eh?
Iit has much more to do with age. When you're young and poor, you want the stuff all the old guys have. By the time you can afford it, you're an old fat guy.
Europe is a big place full of lot's of people with a range of ideas across the political spectrum. Turn off the AM talk shows and FOX, buy a ticket, pack your bike, and go there. You'll have a great time.

that is, one of these days he's going to be old too, just like the people he despises now . . . . .
and if he's not careful, or perhaps meets some misfortune, or perhaps karma catches up with him,
he JUST MIGHT BE FAT TOO!!!!!!!!
And the youngsters of the next generation will be despising him. That's a riot!!!

I don't understand why some people feel the need to elevate themselves by dissing the bike choices of supposedly "fat middle aged poseurs" with triples.
So they have a triple, at least they're not spending $6000 on a 2stroke engined jetski and riding it all over your favourite lake polluting. They spent $6k on a bike, which is good for the industry, and it might be good for YOU if their fat middle aged ass ever tires of it and decides to sell the parts on ebay.
There's a word for the sort of activity the original poster is engaging in:
====================================
Word of the Day for Wednesday May 10, 2000
schadenfreude \SHAHD-n-froy-duh\, noun:
A malicious satisfaction in the misfortunes of others.
The historian Peter Gay -- who felt Schadenfreude as a Jewish child in Nazi-era Berlin, watching the Germans lose coveted gold medals in the 1936 Olympics -- has said that it "can be one of the great joys of life."
--Edward Rothstein, "Missing the Fun of a Minor Sin." New York Times, February 5, 2000
Often the people Pi met in Mendocino wanted to hear these terrible stories, the personal disasters, or they quoted them back to her from what they'd read, with a certain glitter in their eyes -- giving Pi the chance to wonder again as she once had in a Wittgenstein seminar why there wasn't a word in English for Schadenfreude, that very human pleasure taken in other people's misery.
--Sylvia Brownrigg, The Metaphysical Touch
If self-replicating e-commerce baby tycoons get on your nerves, it's schadenfreude time. It's true that the Nasdaq rebounded after its staggering loss Tuesday. Nonetheless, what AP described as "the most volatile day ever for U.S. stocks" left a distinctly bearish aftertaste.
--"Market Motion Sickness." The Industry Standard's Media Grok, April 5, 2000

People can buy whatever bike they want and equip it anyway they please. Nevertheless, it's just hilarious to see $5k+ racing "TEAM" bikes with triples and rear cogs larger than 25 teeth.

I come to BF for threads like this. It's just so much more entertaining than the usual 'What type of xxxxx should I get for my bike?' threads.
To the OP, I have always thought that cycling is such a humbling sport because no matter how good you get there are always tons of people who can beat you easily. To look down on people who are overweight on an expensive bike with a triple simply means that you probably never understood the essence of amateur cycling. For me, cyling is all about knowing my own limits and pushing it further not what others are doing. What's cycling for you?

I am a racer, what you would call a Cat 1 where all you guys come from. I ride a high-end race bike, and I have no problem with old slow guys riding them. Does "Euro" ever consider that they just really enjoy riding their bikes, and appreciate whatever time they can get on their bikes between their busy work schedules.
Why would you deny one of the things in their lives that makes them really happy?
Jealousy is the only reason
