1987 Schwinn Prelude Need Valuation
The Schwinn Prelude in the pics was given to a charity bike group I work with. When we get a nice road bike, sometimes we sell them because road bikes are not popular with the people who receive our bikes and because selling them provides the money we need to buy helmets we give each bike recipient. The Schwinn in question is in excellent condition. There are some scratches on the frame and that's the extent of the wear and tear on this bike. The only non-OEM parts are the tires. On the down side, it's a very large frame. It measures 64cm C to T. The frame is Columbus Tenax. It has Shimano down tube index shifters with Shimano derailers. The brakes are Dia-Compe G 400N. The suade saddle is OEM San Marco. Other than the saddle, the components look pretty generic to me but that Columbus frame is what I'm not sure of. Honestly, this thing is a time capsule it's so clean.
So if we put this up for sale, realistically what's it worth?

$225, maybe $250 tops. Prices are softening here, more like $175. But your market should be a little better.

I agree with the $225 max evaluation as unfortunately, super large size limits its value.,,,,, One has to be something like 6'-3" or taller to ride that bike comfortably.....
It might be a good idea to find a few tall friends that might happen to be looking for a very nice C&V bike to buy.....

Agree with the above. What is definitely has going for it is the fact that it looks to be in great shape, original saddle and even bar tape by the looks of it. Can't have been ridden much. I didn't take the time to look closely at all of the components, but looks original.

Thanks for all the input. Yes, I agree, this bike appears to be 100% original except for the tires that were updated not too long ago. The bar tape, the straps on the cages, the saddle, all appear original. Very little rust anywhere. I wish this was a 54, 56 or 58 cm bike as that would seriously raise the ease to sell it for the charity.

I bought a 1986 Prelude for $80 last summer, which to me was a real bargain. I too was curious about the Columbus Tenax tubing. If I remember correctly, it's regular double butted chromoly tubing that Columbus licensed to Schwinn only. Having that Columbus sticker does make it more desirable than some other ubiquitous Japanese chromoly IMO.
I'd have to agree with a realistic value of around $175, but I could see it going for $225 if one was patient.

I purchased an 86 Prelude last week for $60. Like your's, the bike I bought is in great shape, but it did not have the San Marco saddle, & mine will need new tires fairly soon. Best of luck with your sale.
