New Helmet time

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When it comes to helmets, there is really only one option.

I have an Oakley ARO3. It fits my head well, is light and is very well ventilated. I also like the single cord boa strap used as a fastener. All in all, I am very happy with it. I also tried the Kask helmets when I tried this one on. They were also extremely nice on my head. I didn't buy one though because all they had in stock was the Team Sky model. Kask, like a lot of Italian businesses, is closed in August so they couldn't order in anything else for a month. The Team Sky model might not have been that bad but, I didn't want anyone to have to "dial it up to 400 watts" to teach me a lesson...

While not evidence of any universal truth about MIPs, as you'll note some MIPS helmets do worse than some non-MIPS helmets; this Virginia Tech ranking is an interesting read

+89 to try them on.

I've apparently got a Giro head (Synthe for me). Specialized also fit and Rudy Project. Kask and POC are right out for me, so my only thoughts on the subject is that some of those helmets you listed above will not fit your head.

My last four helmets:
* Specialized Prevail - pretty good all around, but it dripped sweat down my forehead on the hottest days
* Catlike Whisper and Whisper Plus - much better all around except it’s a PITA to put sunglasses into two of the 47 different openings
* Kask Protone - can’t recommend due to lack of ventilation (lots more dripping sweat) made worse when sunglasses are stuffed into it which seems to block critical airflow
* What’s next for me? Ditching the Protone before next season and trying the Speci Prevail II

Good luck and happy shopping!

I recently (on the trails) landed on my head wearing a week old Giro Synthe (non MIPS). How did you get a new one half off?

Went back to the store where i bought it and they contacted Giro.

https://www.giro.com/us_en/cycling-faqs/

Q: Does Giro have a crash replacement program?

If your Giro helmet has been involved in an accident, you may be eligible for a discount on a new Giro replacement helmet.

To learn if your helmet qualifies, please email us at giro-consumersupport@giro.com with the below information:

· Picture(s) of the damaged Giro helmet
· Giro helmet model and serial number
· Giro helmet size and color
· Giro helmet manufacture date
· Your full name
· Your phone number
· Your shipping address

This Crash Replacement Program is available to US customers only. For Giro customers outside of the US, please email us for information on a program that is applicable to you.

I had years old Giro helmet. We're easily talking seven years or more. I had a crash and needed a helmet replacement. I phoned up Giro and yup. No problem. Told me to take the helmet in to the shop and they would honour a new helmet for 50% off. I ended up buying a better helmet than I originally had so I paid a bit more than the 50% discount. Still a good deal though.

I just went from a Specialized Propero 2 to a Specialized Prevail. It's 10% lighter, which I can actually feel. Ventilation on both is pretty good. The new helmet says "S-Works" on the side so I must be faster when I wear it.

Here's a puzzler - I went to the shop (big sale!) Saturday and bought a new helmet because mine is getting kind of ratty.

I currently have a L Giro Synthe. I tried on a L Giro Aether and it was too small! Ended up with a new synthe (with new improved mips). That totally wrecks my theory about having a Giro head.

Tried on a couple specialized helmets too and they fit nicely.

@Sprecher919 I have no idea what model of helmet I ended up getting. I bought the helmet maybe six or seven years ago and that was that. The helmet gives me a kind of mushroom head, which I guess was in at the time. The wife just bough an Oakley and it seems to fit her noggin pretty good.

They only gave me a 30% discount after my crash two months ago. It's not exactly a replacement program

Having said that I am planning to get an Aether with my discount. It fits me very well and never had an issue with my old Synthe.

I was incorrect in my original statement that GIRO gave me 50%. Actually Giro gave me 30% also and the LBS gave me 20%.

sorry for the confusion.

Thx for the clarification. Also hat-tip to the Giro customer service, I sent them an email on Saturday and got an email back with my discount code on Monday. I honestly wasn't expecting a response that fast!

I bought my original helmet during the LBS's Fall Sale, so i got the original helmet for around $170. The replacement was around $140 since it was no longer on sale.

Still better than spending the day in the ER.

I recently got a Bell Stratus MIPS. I'm also in FL where sweat doesn't evaporate. I *love* the sweat guide feature it has. The forehead pad extends outward a little and you can see your sweat drip from it, just in front of your face, and not into your eyes.

The Prevail could be conclusively shown to be the safest helmet money can buy, and that wouldn't change how utterly ridiculous it looks (to me)-- even compared to other bike helmets. It's skyscraper tall.

Giro helmets and my head don't cooperate, so I can't speak to the fit of the Synthe. My wife wears an Aeon, and it fits her like a hat. Lightest helmet I've ever picked up, too. Of that at least I am jealous.
