I bought a steel 1984 Colonago master frame set for $650. Stripped it, powder coated it, redecaled it and built up as a nice single speed. After 4 relistings on Ebay I finally let it go for $750 (complete bike). It was definitely a loss!

Now about 3 years ago I was given an Old School Patterson BMX from a friend. I parted it out, piece by piece and made upwards of $2700! I received $1100 for the Son-lite Hubs. Those were "grail" hubs and doubt I could duplicate that sale again!

That would have been this one but I think I sold this one in 2018. I sold it for over $2000 I think. It came to me as a pretty typical rider, wheels and some other stuff had been replaced. I put it back to period correct for an Italian GC. It was touch and go as to whether I would keep this bike but I have a '72 Italian GC in a bit better shape so I sold this one. I've bought and sold six Masi GCs and a 3V. Made money on every one. The Masi market has always been pretty strong. It was the bike I lusted after when I was 13.

Vintage BMX continues to be RED HOT! Handlebars, stems, brakes, cranksets, wheels, all bring good money, even on the basic stuff.

I recently sold this Pinarello Treviso circa 1985 frame (resprayed but ready for another paint!). I bought the complete bike as shown (almost complete C Record groupset but cracked rims) plus original Rolls saddle and Chorus pedals for $670. I sold the frame for $440 (all Canadian dollars). All I did is disassemble the bike and shine the frame a bit. I think it's not bad (Montreal area) but any comment would be appreciated since I am relatively new in trading C&V bikes.

Just sold my 92 Trek 1500 for $200. It was worth every penny of the buyer's money. I really hated to sell it, but it was a bit too small for me at 52cm. BTW, the pump, Chris King WB cage, and pedals came off before the sale.

I recently purchased a decent road bike that had MTN bike bear traps on it. I sold those for the price of the entire bike. Yes, they are hot indeed.

It is Winter. This bike appears as on the verge of a part out price.
Hopefully only Winter at work.

Most bikes I see at this level sell for BELOW part out price. Complete bikes sell at a discount to the parts if the parts are desirable.

thinking about this and the commentary of a number of experienced folk here to new participants - they advocate buying a donor bike, the act of assembling a bike from parts as being rewarding should not be overlooked.
a custom assemblage has more personal envolvement and satisfaction.
buying and transferring stuff over is less “fun”.

All of these are SF Bay Area CL.

1-1985 Diamondback Apex done up townie style with some non-orig stuff. $300

2-1987 Bridgestone MB-2 that's pretty much original. $200

3-1982/3?? Shogun 2001 Mangalloy. All original except for the tires. $300

Some of these were on CL for weeks. Had no flake-outs and 2 times people showed up, tried the bike and respectfully declined.

I found this Miyata in the trash New Years day, 2019. It obviously spent some time sitting outside. Thought I would refresh it and then sell. (it's too tall for me) After doing the math on tires/cables brake pads, etc. plus my time, I figured it just wouldn't be worth it since I'd only get $100-$130 or so for it. Ended up listing and selling it a few months later for $50 as is. I threw in drop bars and levers from my parts bin so I think the buyer got a good deal. And I got $50 just for walking it home.

I bought a dirty Univega Gran Rally locally off of Craigslist; the bike had sat for decades but it had a nice Shimano 600 Arabesque group set.

Took the bike completely apart, cleaned and polished the parts.

A new set of tires, tubes and rim liners, cleaned and greased the bearings (including pedal bearings) , new cables/housing and a couple nice rolls of cotton bar tape. The bike ended up looking great.

It took a long time to sell and brought $130.00 when it did. I’m glad I had the satisfaction of getting a neglected bicycle back into riding form again because it wasn’t a money maker.

This rings true to me.

The last several trips to the Trexlertown PA bike swap showed reduced interest in general, by way of lower attendance and a lot of empty vendor spaces.

wrk101 Thrifty Bill, if I had seen your first post's $150 garage-queen Trek 400 Elance (Reynolds 531, I believe) listed locally, I would not have been able to resist, even tho I am no longer in collecting mode. Not that that did you any good.
