Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You don't have sales tax in OR? $54...that's about the cost of car registration (every 2 years) here in WI.

Remember, stickers are easy to make, and hard to read while moving.

No sales tax. But income tax, yes, and progressive too. I am not sure the point that Rober is trying to make.

Follow the money. It's the only thing politicians care about ultimately.

Betcha' most of the PDs still won't do d*ck if your bike gets stolen.

Just wait until the "special interests" start catching wind of this. Insurance companies will be lobbying for mandatory insurance on bicycles just like is required with cars. Just wait.

Just an update. The bill died before it even made it into committee.

I didn't realize Oregon had a progressive income tax. Is it property taxes that Oregon doesn't have? I know its something that could be a source of fairly distributed revenue collection that isn't available there. Thanks for filling me in.

The thing about sales taxes though is that they amount to a tax on poor people. That bike tax is just as bad, and for a state with a "green" reputation it seems ridiculous. What's the thinking behind taxing those who use/abuse the roads the least? Also, as someone already mentioned, the proposed tax is so far out of proportion to the value of what is being taxed that it is absurd. I always thought most ideas that Oregon had made sense...

No matter what Oregon comes up with it can't be as bad as some of the ideas that float around here. Here in Utah we have a tax on food!
