Someone's Cassette Trouble and How It Was Received

So what do you guys think? This guy asked a simple, albeit odd question and instead of answer him these guys just asked why he wanted what he did. I support him. I feel bad this guy never got his answer and got such a bum rap about forums. I found him because lately I've been interested in custom cassettes so I see where the guy is coming from. His point about 22-32-42s was pretty spot on so this thread is worth the read if you're bored, I enjoyed it. Have an answer for him? I'd like to see one, if not for a dealer in the UK then worldwide. Think he was chasing a stupid idea? Should that matter? I'm curious to know what everyone thinks.

Here's the link: (Custom Cassette? - BikeRadar Forum)

(btw I was googling, I'd never sign up anywhere else! bikeforums.net ftw!! )

Sometimes we will ask why someone wants something because there may be an easier way to accomplish their goals.

Still, you take a chance on a Brand-X forum and you see what can happen...

Well, he starts right in on that psycho rant. I'd have no interest in helping him.

Hmmm...

Custom gearing threads can get a bit wild, even on BikeForums.

Was that a 6 year old post?

Lots of single sprockets are available on E-Bay. Probably also at one's local bike shop. Or local bike coop has a whole bin of them.

However, modern cassettes are supposed to shift better if all the shift ramps line up. So the more jumps you make, the worse it might shift.

If I was going to try to build the 8 speed cassette, 11, 12,13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 23

I'd probably try:
SRAM PG-970 or Ultegra CS-6500 11-21 9 speed cassette.

They'd donate 11,12,13,14,15,16,17 + 19/21
Replace all the spacers with 8s spacers, plus the 23T large sprocket.

One may still have troubles with the 11/12 sprockets. Try them out and see if they shift fine, or replace with 8s equivalent.

I would seriously also consider an upgrade to more gears. 9s, 10s, or 11s.

There were a couple of BF threads on custom cassettes in May.
