Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road Shoes

I currently ride the road with old mtn bike shoes and very heavy pedals from a cast off mtn bike. I wish to upgrade to more bicycle oriented shoes and road style pedals, but all the shoes I try on at the LBS are too narrow for me.

I have an E or maybe an EE foot. Is there a brand or model shoe for we who have wider feet than a 50 kg Italian?

well, I have wide feet as well and seem to find Specialized shoes fit well. YMMV.

nike and sidi make wide shoes, and pearl izumi shoes tend to run wider than other brands

If you search the forum, there are several historical threads on this as it is a recurring inquiry. However, to get you started here are some possible options for you:

Nike Ventoux II - reportedly built on a wider last, can be bought online off the Trek Bike web site.

Sidi Mega - I've seen regular, narrow and Mega width options sold online. Have only tried on the regular, too narrow for me (I have E width feet)

Shimano R-151 - not all of their shoes seemed wide toe me, but this one is.

DMT R3 - these fit me very well. The shoes I currently use, w/ Speedplay X-2 pedals.

Lake - I've never tried them on, but many recommend as made for wider feet

Performance house brand - inexpensive, wide toe box, fit E width very comfortably.

Thanks all for your replies. These suggestions give me the leads I need. I did try searching the forum, but I must have used the wrong criteria. Again, thanks to all.

This is the direction I am moving in a few months. Used to be called Lamson, and *very* highly regarded.

My Sidi Mega fits great but I am looking for the next level of comfort and performance.

I like the Sidi Megas too. Even the standard Sidi's do ok if you buy them one size larger as they will give you a bit more width. To go the next level, you might want to look into the Rocket 7 shoes. They are custom and, are reported to be extremely good shoes. Many riders swear by them.

To be more precise, the .5 sizes are said to be wider.

Custom shoes are, of course, ideal, but $800 for the first pair and $500 thereafter is a bit much for my place in cycling now. I am, at best a mediocre bicyclist. My typical three hours in the saddle can tolerate off the rack shoes for at least a while.

Still, it's nice to dream, eh?

One thing that Sidi has over most American branded shoes is the upper--it is much more supple.

Are any cycling shoes made in America these day?

"Branded", like Specialized etc., but Shimano also lacks suppleness--both good shoes, however. As usual, the euros tend to be a half to a full step ahead in terms of refinement.

D2 and Rocket7 are U.S. made.
