Here is a podcast of Sheldon Brown's interview of Grant Peterson at Interbike. The main topic is the New Rivendell collaboration with QBP, on a bike with 650b tires, but they digress into talking about bike costumes. You go Sheldon! https://www.sheldonbrown.com/podcasts/grantpetersen.html
It is in mp3 and transcribed.

While I agree with some of their ideology, I generally hate that Rivendell rhetoric. Despite their denial, there's a significant retro-grouch component there. Interesting read, though.

Well, there's a point there, but for those of us who have already imbibed the grape kool-aid (skinny tires, lycra, pushing ourselves to the point of pain to ride faster) and are actually enjoying it....sorry, what was Peterson's point again?

I disagree with the NASCAR comparison.
If actual race cars were available for 3-4k - I’d own one.

Too bad they don't sell adult sized Ross Polo bikes anymore cuz I'd buy one if they did. Comfortable, easy to pop wheelies on and cool coaster brakes to do skid-outs on.

Sheldon:
It really bothers me, the concept that you need to wear special clothing to ride a bicycle.
Grant:
I think that's what keeps people off of bikes. If you had to wear an oddball uniform to go buy a McDonald's hamburger, McDonalds would go out of business.
Sheldon:
Good point.
[start_rant]This is full of false assumptions. A cyclist does not need to wear special clothing to bicycle anymore than a rock climber, golfer, baseball player, soccer player, hiker, so on and on, does. Why do people wear special clothing? Because it is comfortable and enhances the cycling experience. I suspect Sheldon is really saying it bothers him that he needs to wear special clothing.
This entire article is full of BS from at least one who has a vested interest in people believing this way.
And if Sheldon is so enamored with 38c tires, I'll sell him the tires of my Surly Cross-Check. The high capacity low pressure tires seem to work fine in the 700c size.
Ps: I think most of the people i see going into a mcdonalds look to me like they are wearing oddball uniforms-clothes designed to fit morbidly obese bodies horribly distended by years of neglect and gluttony.[/end_rant]

It was 80 degrees this afternoon. I snuck out of work at 4 o'clock and went for a ride. I wore a t-shirt and gym shorts with cotton sweat socks and had a great time. I doubt seriously that I would have had a better time in a Discovery costume. I am certain I would have been less comfortable wearing a silly outfit.
