May I introduce "Lemondrop" on the left, and "Snow White" on the right. Lemondrop is a 1970 Schwinn Super Sport, and Snow White is a 1985 Schwinn Super Sport. Both are very sweet riding.

Only three of the roughly 2 dozen bikes I've had got names. And those names didn't come from me. I realized about year two the bike I took my username from was Pete. Been Pete ever since. Edit: named 20 years before I qualified for this forum!

The other two have a more involved story. I went to an as-is sale for donated bikes that were not feasible to re-build and resell looking for a fun summer fix gear. The bikes were $20, 30 and 40 each. No test ride, no return. There was a $20 sport Peugeot. Been hit hard by a SUV; dented top tube, trashed fork and both chainstays were about to break although I wouldn't realize that until later. Tape measure said the bike should work for me so I bought it, knowing that if this bike was a keeper and ever got repainted, "Team Dumpster" was going on the downtube. Had about $105 invested in it for its first ride. I hadn't ridden a bike that much fun since my old racing bike! Two weeks later I was wrapping the BB and chainstays with carbon fiber and epoxy. Both chainstays were about to break off. Repair worked. A month later, I happened to be listening to an ex-addict talking about her exploits and saying she expected to be found in a dumpster any morning for what she was doing. "That's it. Bike's name is Jessica!" (the speaker). Bike eventually got a repaint (in the same batch as a custom). Team Dumpster on the downtube, Jessica on the toptube (covering the pulled out dent).

7000 miles later I started thinking that I should put Jessica to rest and replace her with a custom bike. I did. My ti fix gear. And its name would be Jessica 2 except that sounds dumb, so she is Jessica J, my last initial, also on the toptube. And, yes, both of these bikes are very female!

Since I was thrown off the Allez in Nov (fractured pelvis) and subsequent DVT (blood clots) in legs and lungs I've added a recumbent trike to the stable. It's a Vortritek 900R (German) so in the spreadsheet it's Vor9 and I affectionately call it Vorti (Vor-Tee). Takes a bit more prep and effort to ride but it's so stable and lotza fun for an old duffer (69) like me.

What is your bike's name?

Though I certainly cherish all the bikes I have had as an adult, it never occurred to me to name them. FYA, I recently started a thread on the Commuting Forum, ”Describe Your Commute” on a template, and one of the items is “Bike Name.” This was suggested by the subscriber, chephy, who had originally used the idea.

Most of the replies either listed the model name or left it blank, with a minority giving a name (or comments). Few examples:

Then there were: Byron (Irwin7638), Ridley (Buffalo Buff), Ginger (GARiverTrail Rdr), and Trucka' (JoeyBike).

BTW, chephy, as mentioned above, is an ardent advocate of bike naming.

PS: I just noted that this is a zombie thread, started 2-19-13, and reawakened by Greybeard712 on 2-13-15. He has this signature line:

Funny, at least to another greybeard.

My wife and I rode show horses for a living, before we aged to the point that wasn't possible any longer. Our bikes get named after the more successful horses we put into the ring. She has as much input as I do, and they're not named until a thorough evaluation of their looks and personality.

Meet "Bogey". A heavy hunter, sure footed and slightly slow. Good looking enough to haul an amateur customer around the show ring, but performance challenged for the pro classes. Safe!


Here's "Sox". A flashy conformation hunter that had two white legs in front (see fork). High performance, but comfy for the long Classic courses.


Finally, There's "Mary". An inexpensive American Thorobred with good looks, but a $.05 mind that was capable of delivering a good trip, but there were days she would throw you in the dirt just as easily.

None of my bikes are named. I don't name inanimate objects, hell I didn't want to name our dog (he appears inanimate most of the time) but the women in the house insisted.

I like naming my stuff, especially electronics =D

My first bike as a kid was named "Nautilus".
My fist real bike as an adult was initially named "Nautilus 2" but I figured she was female and deserved a girly name, so I settled on "Mireille."

But I never call my bike "Mireille" anyway so it doesn't matter

My wife and I named our children. I can see naming certain pets, like a cat or hamster, but not a fish. I can see naming a boat, because of tradition and the need to register and have a call sign with port radio operators.

I cannot see naming a bike. The manufacturer already gave them model names. Plus, they have design characteristics (i.e., touring, fixed gear, carbon). Those are good enough to distinguish one from another.

I wish I could name my bikes. Really, I do. I just don't have the imagination to come up with a good name, or the attention span to keep thinking of one. Consequently I have "The Trek" for a 1978 Trek sports tourer currently serving as my winter bike; "The IRO" for the fixed gear, and the "C-Rex" for the custom Steve Rex road bike - can't even take credit for that one, my buddy came up with it in an e-mail, presumably because it's shorter than writing out "Steve Rex" (fits better in the profile name on the Garmin as well).

My bikes are anything but inanimate objects, so they get names. I took about a week to name my newest bike. Her frame was crafted in Augusta, GA, about 100 miles from me. Her stem and seat post were manufactured about 30 miles away in Macon, GA. Her headset was assembled in North Carolina. Her rims were made in Florida and the wheels assembled in my house. Like a true Southern Belle, she is stunningly beautiful, but not afraid to go strolling down a dirt road. Her name is Belle. Oh yeah, and she's blue (ish).
