Alex Singer dumpster find

This was saved from a dumpster near my work. I am in a marina town, and boaters are forever pitching all sorts of goodies in and against the local dumpsters. It does have some surface rust and some of the Campagnolo bits may get replaced, but nearly 100% original and about 1974, based on the components and serial number. Plus, it is my size!

what people will throw away never ceases to amaze me!

Glad they didn't use it for an anchor, it's definitely not.

I cannot take credit for the dumpster dive. Another guy in town, who works on the docks, grabbed it and sold it to me. So I didn’t directly save it from the dump, but did save it from being butchered by someone else who may have got to it first.😊

Definitely an amazing trash pick.

This has a production frame look to me. I know both Singer and Herse built some roadies (usually less desirable than the randos), but I think I've seen production bikes with Singer's brand before. I'm sure someone else can comment more extensively.

the serial number is definitely a Singer number, right in the 1974 time frame. It is not on the list of numbers sent to Spence Wolf at CBS, but very close to them.

my guess is that it was sent to the US in that period as a bare frame and built up here. My Cinelli and Masi from that era were both done that way. Definitely a road bike and not as desirable as his tourers, but also much more uncommon. I do have an inquiry into the shop on the off chance they may have a record of where it was sent

I want to believe this is a true find , but I’m really leaning towards the OP yanking the C&V chain here.

i can’t imagine anyone owning a Singer tossing it in the bin.

Hmm, it's not April 1st... This boggles the mind. "Alex Singer dumpster find" are not words often found together. Congratulations are in order.

I guess there's still a certain segment of the population that thinks bikes are toys. Rusty old bike? Just throw it out...

no chain yanking by me! Tell me what to say to make it seem real to you!

if this was a Huffy, nobody would question it. Unfortunately, to some people, this was just another old bike, so out it goes.

some of my best bikes have come from people who just didn’t care, and just wanted that old, rusty thing gone!

I believe it because I've seen great bikes thrown away. Most Americans would not know a Herse or Singer. A bike is a child's play thing for most Americans.

Holy ****. There are just no words.

Singer did contract with C.N.C. during the bike boom years to build a stock model. However, this one does not look like one of those - the lugs on the C.N.C.-made bikes are more plain. I believe the OP's was made in the Singer shop.

See a picture of a C.N.C. "Singer":

I am fairly certain most people in this world know nothing about Herse or Singer. My daughter lived in France for a while and saw a lot of "junk" bikes over there, just like we have them. Safe to say those riders know nothing about the good stuff. It ain't exclusive to any one population.

I predict a growing number of C&V bike junkies hanging around the dumpsters up in Bow, Washington.

Score of the year and it's only the tenth of January!
