Unbelievable Schwinn Disc Brakes?

I just watched the Netflik series “Unbelievable”. A character was riding a Schwann low end bike in 2008 with disc brakes. It seemed too early in the evolution of disk brakes to see them on an everyday bike ridden by a teenager. Any comments from forum members?

Time flies, doesn't it? I had a low end GT MTB with Avid discs very early in the new Millennium.

Disk brakes, like dual-pivot brakes, have been used on bikes since the 1970s, but they only achieved widespread popularity relatively recently.

In 2003 I was looking for a new hybrid bike with disc brakes. There were few disc-equipped hybrids on the market at that time - I ended up getting a new Novara Big Buzz. Disc brakes were common only on MTB's.

Bicycles with disc brakes is nothing new. JC Penny had them on their bikes in the 70's.
