When I was a sophomore in college in 1979, I bought myself a brand new Peugeot PXN-10LE. At around 21 lbs, it was the lightest bike I had ever owned, and it was pretty light for an off-the-shelf bike. It was probably about the same weight as what professional racers rode. My supervisor at the university cafeteria asked to feel it, so she lifted it and said it was so incredibly heavy. She was French, complete with the accent, and she said she used to race bikes. She said long ago, her bike weighed five pounds. I said, "Are you sure it wasn't five kilograms?" Even that would have been impossible. No, she said, it was five pounds. And she was older; there was no argument to be had.

A couple times I have heard "Handmade by Claud Butler himself" about frames made in the '80s. [Claud sold the Claud Butler name in '58, made his last frames in '68, died in '78]

How about this one. Rare, light weight ready to ride and aluminum.

I finished building a Trek 600 1985 bike for my son in law and was showing it off to an older gentleman in his seventies and when he picked it up (21lbs) he said " Not bad, I had an English bike back in the sixties that weighed half that!' I replied "in the sixties you were obviously a lot stronger!" He actually swears that his old bike was MUCH lighter, go figure.

This is hilarious.

It's been years since I searched Craigslist daily for bikes. I miss the weird and mostly positive interactions I'd have with sellers.

I almost forgot the Mondia I bought on eBay was listed as an "old three speed bike" and named

1972 Mandra Three Speed
something like "Mandra" ! It must have turned off a lot of people, just me and one other bidder , so I won . $250 with all the Campagnolo parts, no rust , and in very good shape once I cleaned it up . Even the Brooks Pro saddle was there and good . Just needed TLC. Best three speed I have ever ridden!

Yep, or the single Campagnolo component (usually a front derailleur) among a sea of mismatched parts from other brands, but stil "Campagnolo parts."

Reminds me of a Tommasini that was on Craigslist recently with just a few pictures, but the seller decided to dedicate one of them to a closeup of the nicely pantographed chainset. Unfortunately the classy panto said, "Daccordi"...

I wouldn't eat there.

"Those are slugs."
"No, those are escargot" in a French accent, and somebody will eat 'em.

"It's a 54cm, and in great shape."

Scuffed 59cm arrived.

Otherwise, when I was in college, working my way through by running 5K's up to marathons, I was "the runner guy" at a local small chain athletic shoe store. I always had problems with selling Reebok Princesses to women who said they were for aerobics (they just wanted cute shoes) because "these are crap." My boss clued me in on the art of flirting with customers to produce a sale, which I never seemed to learn. However, he could sell.

One day, I heard "double-stitched for extra cushioning" and I had to go outside and laugh it off. Came back in, customer was buying 3 pair, because "you live an hour away; you just never know when more will come in."

Dude could come in looking for phat laces for his Puma's, and Danny would send him out the door in a 3-stripe adidas suit, a ball cap, 6 pairs of socks, 3 t-shirts and a tube of Shoo Goo. We'd pile 10 years of junk on a table in the mall for a sidewalk sale, and he'd sell it all, get 3 phone numbers and a line on a nice Glock for sale.

Selling that doesn't feel like selling is impressive. I was able to get in that groove sometimes when I was working in sales. It felt good, but overall I disliked sales and got out of it as fast as I could.

Why do I find that exceedingly hard to believe?

Oh, right. Yoga pants hadn't been invented yet.

Reminds me of the bass boat sale joke, not appropriate for "family hour", but the one that ends in "Looks like your weekend's shot; may as well go fishing."

Ha, maybe an actual Claud Butler! He made some pretty light stuff back before his drinking got out of hand! But 10.5lbs would indeed be quite hard to achieve.

I had escargot in Paris. They were in a pesto sauce. It was tasty. It tasted like pesto sauce.

Not only does Kabuki rub it in, he takes a pic in big/big out of spite.
