What happened?
I’m a roadie so I thought I had to add drop bar ends on my mountain beast ( there’s a new loose gravel trail near me and my 700x32’s ain’t hacking it ). I used some Origin8 Propulsion. The right side has humps every layer but the left side is smooth. I tried re-wrapping the left side to match but I couldn’t get it still flat. Same bar ends, same tape, same guy, same two beers. What in the world is going on??

Start going ccw with the right side.

It looks like different tension & overlap on the right side tape vs left side. It's also a pretty horrific looking cockpit, but YMMV I guess.

I have plenty of hand positions available on my drop bars. The only hand position worth adding would be an aero position. Your handlebars are literally something out of a cartoon:

Just unwrap and keep trying until it suits you. You are wrapping in the correct direction, FWIW. I agree that's a bizarre looking set up

I just tried it out and I liked it. Experiment and deserved ridicule complete.

I am all for alt bars but this is a bit off. I would much rather have some Koga Denham Bars (which Koga doesn't want to sell in the U.S. and make those boku bucks) or Velo Orange Crazy Bars or Surly Moloko Bars (though would love to see a lightweight version of them for something other than my parts hybrid) or just a good pair of drop bars I don't find the need for both especially with multiple bikes.

Are you using new bar tape or reusing old bar tape? Old bar tape can have areas that have stretched more and thus become more flat.

Man, so many judgmental people in this world anymore. Free thinking is being beat into submission. did you at least wear a mask, helmet and eye protection when you did it?
BTW I agree looks like the spacing and tension wasn't held uniform between the two sides.

The tape is new and one sided with sticky on the inside. I will try re-wrapping the right side tonight.

You've used anticlockwise tape on a clockwise wrap.
Are you left handed?
BTW - your wrapping looks better than mine, I'm just jealous.

It's just something cheap I bought when I ran out of my favorite, no longer available, Nashbar brand tape. GOSH I love that stuff! I used my last roll on my Litespeed.

Is it possible that one edge of the tape is thicker than the other, like clapboards, so will only “lay” right in one wrapping direction? I’ve never seen tape like that but, hey....

What happened Deep hate, is the second beer got you! Tapes have what is called skiving on the wraps. The skiving is a drop down ledge on one side of the tape for wrapping. If you start again and find the side that is skived and wrap so that is under the next layer you will get the same result as the first. As for the direction of wrapping I think about how my fingers will fit into any groves the wrap might create. Normally if you start from the inside of the bar and wrap over to the outside you will have the proper wrap for each hand. It is something I learned in the golf industry, they have grips for left handed players and grips for right handed players. the difference is in the direction of the wrap. Hope this helps, and you can likely re-use the tape by changing direction and skiving pattern. Smiles, MH
