The other thing to note here is mass produced frames need to be made for the worst common denominator (a big, strong, heavy person riding on really rough terrain - for example). Some custom manufacturers pick tubing/frame materials based on your individual weight, riding style, planned terrain, etc. - so regardless of frame material, a bike can be made light if you are willing to go custom.

My carbon bike was in the shop for a few days and I've been riding the aluminum one. I just got the carbon bike back and rode it 30 miles this morning.
It felt awesome in comparison. Fast, smooth, comfy.
Maybe it's just all in my head, but I like it better.
