I've got a few of these and they're excellent (shared only bus/bike lanes)

Lawrenceville is the new South Side. Lots of new residents, businesses, and night life. It's really thriving. If you still live there and have owned your own home for years, you're probably sitting on a gold mine. I have to agree that the side streets are quite narrow. Frankly, it's not an area that I enjoy riding through for the very reasons you mention.
On the weekends, I sometimes get in an early ride in the South Side, before most people wake up and before the streets get busy. That might work for you in your neighborhood, too.
Consider joining BikePGH, the local advocacy organization. It's very active in promoting safe biking and walking in the city. They've done some good stuff in making the city more bike-friendly. https://www.bikepgh.org/

Most streets are safe to ride if you have the knowledge and skill. Read about riding in traffic.

I live in Pittsburgh and would love to use my bike on the streets but they are too congested.. Why don't they make them one way.. Most are too narrow for two cars to fit thru anyhow..
I'm 60 and grew up in Lawrenceville and love what's happening to it and would love to bike but it is way too dangerous!
Thoughts?
Thank you..

You can do that here: https://bike-pittsburgh-wfhbzmzcacho5...g101-1-2-1.pdf
Or take a class in urban riding to be more comfortable: City Cycling - BikePGH : BikePGH
And you can get a map here (online, interactive, or paper) here: Maps, Guides, & Videos - BikePGH : BikePGH

Hi Pitts64,
I rode through Lawrenceville early on Sunday morning over the weekend. I started in Millvale and rode the Northshore trail to Heinz Field, crossed the Clemente Bridge and meandered my way in downtown and Point State Park, then rode a bunch of streets downtown before heading up Smallman. Then I zig-zagged my way on back streets from 36th to 40th Streets to cross back to Millvale. The streets were basically empty, but I started at 7:20 AM and was back at Millvale by 8:30. It was a great morning to be out for a ride. You might find that Lawrenceville is rideable if you get out the door at sunrise on the weekends!

I'm not really understanding how one-way streets make for safer cycling.
