I kinda wonder who builds these bikes. A few of the big Italian companies like Bianchi and Wilier have them, and I know that Cinelli currently subcontracts their high end bikes like the XCR to Cicli Barco ( XCR FRAMES | ciclibarco ) . Though if I remember right, contracting bikes to trusted builders wasn't exactly unusual back in the day...

What did you change the crankset to? I have an Eroica and really like it. Very smooth, responsive. I heard from the purists but it's the only Bianchi that is completely built in Italy and the parts are new. I think the steel bikes are so comfy. I have a Specialissima with the CV technology and while it is a fine bike it still rattles on the rough roads - nothing like the Eroica.

I always thought that was funny. I remember stories about people getting upset at "Made in USA" bikes which were basically just Panasonic/Miyata bikes assembled here, but the line between that and a "Made in USA" bike from a custom builder with Italian drivetrain parts, English Reynolds tubes, French wheels from Mavic, etc- is a bit thin as is.

I just spoke with Alex Battaglin this morning on the phone. I have ordered a Marosticana but have yet to provide the details for the build. He said that they will send me a list of measurements to be taken and questions to be answered to determine how the frame will be built. It will be a completely custom build, for me and me alone! I will post again when the next step occurs. It seems that the process will include much input from my end as well as much feedback from theirs, including video of the build process! They said that with the holidays it should be a 7 week turn-around to finish the frame. This should be fun!

I can't help but wonder though if these beautiful bikes will be met with the same disdain as some people have for bikes like the Bianchi L'Eroica? Such a shame that there are those who take a negative view of these modern efforts to honor the traditions of the past. But, I for one wish to support builders like Alex Battaglin and Bianchi who are trying to keep the torch lit!

What defines "made in..."? To me, the country where the torch hits the steel. That's it's origin.
I had a Pinarello carbon bike that proudly had a "made in Italy" decal. But I found out that the carbon was lay-ed up in Taiwan. And only painted in Italy. And assembled in the USA by me.
So where was it actually "made in"???
But, my wife's Lexus ES was built in Kentucky. Does that mean it is an American car???

Well, the short answer is not right away. I was on my way to San Diego on my motorbike on Tuesday when things started to go sideways. I initially continued on my way down the coast after the photo shown below was taken and got to Arcata California for the night. Later that night I realized that the wildfires had closed many roads on my way forward and I decided to turn around to head back home. It took a bit of luck to get back up the coast to return home but I made it. More fires had started and many roads in Oregon were now closed as well. By the time I got home on Wednesday afternoon they had begun evacuating areas near my home and by the next day I was also under the threat of evacuation. It looks like things are settling now but my projects are on hold for a bit until normalize again.
This pic was taken on Tuesday morning Sept 8 at 10:00 am just a couple miles south of Salem Oregon. No photoshop, this is just how it looked along with a snow of ash!

Cool heritage. Doriano De Rosa (Ugo's son) started brazing in his Dad's shop at the age of 14. 2 years later Eddy Merckx rode one of his frame to win Milan San Remo. NAHBS winner....
