Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Stages 1.6.8 Firmware Update

I tried to get an answer from Stages through FB Messenger and they have not gotten back with me...even though they read it. Power Meter City also did not know.

Anyway, here's background and the question:

The v1.6.8 firmware update (JUL20) states that it "enables auto-zero function in smart cranks".

I know that Stages power meters have auto temperature regulation....so my question was: Are the Gen III cranks considered "smart cranks" and if so does that mean that Gen III cranks now have "auto-zero" capability.

What do you guys think?

I'd be curious to what the definition of smart cranks is... if the link above does not describe or apply.

Auto-zero would be a huge functional upgrade IMO. I'll try to call them later and get the skinny since nobody really knows.

Auto Zero

I opened a Stages support ticket on 08/04/2020 and I'm still waiting on a reply.

Way to go Stages!

So.. anyone know what firmware update 1.7.1 does?
Also.. I don't suppose there's any way to manually change the Stages read temperature? It typically always seems off by at least 10 degrees colder than it really is. Related, what degree of correlation is there between how these meters read power and the ambient temperature that they 'think' it is?

Did they just come out with another update?

How are you checking the temp, through the app? If taking the bike from inside to outside, it probably needs a little time to get acclimated.

I suspect the temperature related compensation relies more on precision and less on accuracy.
