Famous last words. Today I learned my Vectors "work" with running shoes, I averaged 50 watts.
A friend of mine loves ghost towns, so we decided to ride out to the old Monte Cristo townsite. I didn't want to ride the trail because there's a river crossing with no bridge and that doesn't sound like fun with a road bike. And the map shows a cleanup road that was used for remediation. My friend brought a MTB and even she thought it wasn't rideable. There was a lot of "do you want to go back or hope it gets better?" and the answer was always "I don't want to do that again, let's hope the sketchy river crossing is better."
Have you ever had a trail divorce?
Next time you're on crappy pavement, remember it can get a lot worse.

Sounds like a job for cyclocross, aka, "Let's choose a route where we have to carry a perfectly good bicycle."

There's a dirt fire road that I go on sometimes that has some giant erosion gullies on a (usually) downhill section, maybe 1 1/2 foot wide and 2 feet deep.
Once I was hiking there, approaching from below, & watched as a cyclist came down, and crashing, fully disappeared from view into the the gully.
No tires are wide enough to deal with that.

Not having been out there in maybe ten years, about a month ago I wanted to ride out to the Point Reyes National Seashore to Drake's Beach (the road is closed out to the Lighthouse). I was riding to Point Reyes Station anyway, so why not head out there while in the neighborhood.
OMFG. Worst. Road. Ever. Like. Literally. EVER.
Flooded. Cratered. Cracked and split. Repairs that would knock your fillings out. Under-repair sections consisting of fist-sized sharp granite rocks sorta kinda bulldozed down into something not quite a road, exactly one car width wide and complete driving anarchy because, well, it's packed with tourists.
