It's not the distance, it's the prices.

Genetics have failed me
200m to Edeka, 700m to Rewe, 3km to Aldi, 5km to a farmers market. 20km into the city, 45km to a pretty climb with a beautiful lookout across the alps and good cakes at the top, mostly bikepath connected.
And that's how the wifey and I get around for shopping:

I live 4 blocks from the only grocery store within a 30 mile radius.

New place! Now, it's +/- 2 miles to the closest normal grocery store, depending on which roads I take. My previous town was pretty flat and quiet, but here it's all rolling hills with narrow streets and a bit more traffic. Of three features (shortest distance, bike-friendly streets, least amount of climbing), I can have two.
A new store a bit closer is supposed to open soon, though the roads that lead there are quite busy.

Literally have an aldi, taget, and jewel all within a few blocks
The biggest issue with not owning a car is when you need to carry something large. Luckily more and more stores are now delivering.
Even at just a few blocks away still have to limit what I buy.

LET'S ROLL
I'm in the New York City area; can walk to lots of shops.
But sometimes I want more choices, better price and/or quality.
Might ride 5 miles or more:

I'm 16 miles to the nearest grocery store which is a walmart so 32 mile round trip. The worst part is most of the road is terribly beat up with blow outs and potholes, fair amount of hills. There is a smoother route I can take but its longer and hillier. The only thing closer is dollar general about 10 miles one way and I don't really like getting much there. I'm planning to get a bob trailer soon so I can make my trips count. Currently I just take an older bike with a rack and a homemade bag but the weight is too high on the rack and its hard to make it all fit. Once I get a trailer I figure I can eliminate taking a vehicle at all for groceries or shopping and go once a week. We also grow as much food at home as possible.

I might walk 3 miles away and back. Not too far to consider walking and expecting to get back before sunset if the trip started at sunrise.
When i had a bicycle i did not often use it for grocery shopping. I ate at many restaurants that were within reach and very convenient to get to.
I am currently thinking of building a bike that is good for hauling cargo like items gotten from shopping for example.
