Coffee

The two bike stores near me (Green Lizard and Bike Lane) are half bike shop and half coffee bar. I came across this on the Luxa website, a shop in Poland:

Drinking coffee is an integral part of cycling

During training, after a trip and off the bike days. Regardless of whether you are a road cyclist, mountain cyclist, or maybe you go on long bike-packing trips. A coffee and cake break will surely satisfy every cyclist during casual training.

In recent years, a kind of culture has developed that attracts cyclists to the door of the cafe. A solid dose of caffeine allows you to extract the hidden reserves of energy that we need so much while riding a bicycle. We associate Coffee Ride with a leisurely ride with friends. No rush, having a good time with friends.

Coffee is fine in the morning. I'll stick with beer in the afternoon.

Exactly. I'm sure that this is carved in stone at The Rules, specifcally 47 and 56, although the latter is somewhat vague on timing.

We have a bike shop/coffee bar here in Memphis as well, Latting Speed Shop. Been in there once, takes them too long to whip up a cup. Did a solo coffee ride myself this morning, about 30 miles total. Starbucks at the halfway point and, for once, a fairly decent cup of Joe. I was the only one sitting outside drinking hot coffee with a heat index of 95°, but it didn't feel bad in the shade. Gratuitous pic I took of the bike while drinking said coffee:

I think the "experience" shop is a workable model in the right community. Right now it's hard to see how a traditional bike shop pencils out, the cost of retail space, margins, and having adequate inventory are all working against it.

But I think there's a place for a shop that has "lite" inventory, maybe 4 repair stands for customer use (gotta pay $50 bucks to become a member) a couple big screens, sofa, tables, and coffee or beer, maybe even a cafe, that's a model that might work.

I thought about doing an e-bike rental shop with that concept somewhere on the Mediterranean coast, Valencia or Malaga, had a nephew and his friend all set to go over there and do it but a buddy told me that russian gangs had pretty much taken over in all the larger towns, they have the police paid off etc.

so there went that idea

Looks like beer or tea, in the middle of the ride.

Beer and Old Dutch potato chips?

(I am Canadian by osmosis, grew up watching CBC out of Lethbridge, Alberta as for a long time we got better reception for that than the Great Falls Mt stations, think Don Messer's Jubilee)

Every time I’ve toured with Neal he’s always the first to wake up to get the crappy motel coffe brewing, then another coupla fierce ones at breakfast. If he sees a coffee shop en route we pull in. I think he puts it in his water bottles.

@BoltBreaker is the same with pastries. Touring with the two of them might mean never getting to our destination.

Don’t get me started about Mr Every 10k, @SquireBlack.

No no no, coffee without ceasing, morning, afternoon, evening and night, all the time. Some good research about coffee's neuro-protective effects.

Besides, how else am I supposed to maintain my prestige Campagnolo image?

Old Dutch potato chips! Now there's a flash of nostalgia, being from Minneapolis. Summers were awesome, riding around the lakes, then for lunch a bag of Old Dutch and a Grain Belt. My wife's aunt worked at the plant. At Christmas she brought a huge bag of all the products fresh from the line. Don't have them in Virginia - Utz country.
