Hi, cyclists. In the beginning of April, I’m leaving everything behind in LA to cycle the country, and possibly Canada, with my dog, little money, and no plan. I would like some friends who are up for an adventure full of soul-searching. I’m leaving this city behind and everything in it to start anew on the road, and to document my experience in a blog, YouTube channel, or a book. I don’t want to do this alone.
This takes courage. I don’t know how long the trip will be yet. It could be 6 months or a year. It could be longer. One goal of mine is to visit every national park along the way. I just want to have a good time with a like-minded team and to discover the meaning of life. We can create art along the way and enjoy the best beaches. The sky’s the limit... The world is our oyster.
Gals, dudes, and couples are all encouraged to apply.
About me: 20s. Female. Queer. Artist. Infected with wanderlust.

If you stay on quiet backroads, the dog might be okay. What kind of dog? Are you able to carry the dog on or with the bike?
What you're looking at doing can be done.
People will throw up a lot of negatives. You can back down or plow through or find a positive mindset.

@Bikesplendor---One of the issues is that it is not possible to stay on "quiet backroads" all the way. And if she has no plan ... how would she even find the existing routes which made use of more back roads?
Another issue is that a dog Cannot keep up with a bike all day. Dogs are simply not made for long, high-speed running. And they are not great for running on pavement.
Another issue is leash laws. An unleashed dog on a public thoroughfare .... probably not legal in most states. Yet a dog leashed to a person a bike, except in a carefully controlled setting, is also a hazard.
Another issue is traffic. Can you imagine crossing a partially paved metal lattice bridge which is several hundred feet long and has no bike lane, with cars and trucks passing at 50+ mph ... with an Unleashed dog trying to keep up? There is basically No Safe Way to travel with a dog while on a bike on a public road. if the dog is leashed he could knock the bike into traffic. If not, the dog could run into traffic---or chase a squirrel or something off into the roadside wilderness.
I am not negative. I am realistic and experienced. And her "No money, no plan" would break down pretty freaking early in the trip .... but that would be okay if she were Not bringing the dog. I used to walk and hitchhike interstate. I wouldn't recommend it ... but you can do that with minimal cash, because there isn't much to break down .... shoes and clothes can be picked up at Dollar stores or Thrift stores. Not so with bike parts.
Even hitchhiking ... you pretty much need a map of some sort unless you don't care where you end up.
But once she adds the dog .... She Needs a plan. it is definitely Not cool to tell the dog, "Well, it looks like neither of us are eating Again tonight ... maybe tomorrow."
If caring about her pet makes me a negative person, I will wear the label proudly.

I imagined the dog would be sitting on a cushy platform on top of the rear rack, in a tow behind trailer, or even in a front basket. It didn't even occur to me that it would be running next to the bike for 10,000 miles.

It's amazing how people who have never done something tell others why they shouldn't do it.
Iohan Gueorguiev had the same idea. The entirety of his plan was to cycle from Prudhoe Bay to Argentina and camp along the way. He made it.

Did anyone who is complaining, perchance, read the rest of the thread?
Read Post #8 ... then get back to me.
As far as selling art .... how many people here have tired to make money---let alone a living---as an artist? Oh, only my hand is raised?
Maybe she does sculpture in stone? Maybe she paints--maybe miniatures, maybe murals. Maybe she does garage-sized installations. Maybe she does motorized electronic mobiles. Maybe she could sell art .... along the way ... to fund her trip.
She never suggests it. She suggests people could make art along the way ... which is a huge distance from selling art.
Whatever. Read Post #8 and see how silly you all look .... later.

Or maybe she makes life-sized dinosaurs out of welded scrap metal.
You seem to be unaware of the wider range of possibilities.
It isn't that hard to do.

Get in touch with WTF Bikexplorers ? A summit and ride series supporting, celebrating, and connecting Women/Trans/Femme cyclists who use their bicycles to explore. and I bet you’ll be able to find a touring partner or possibly a group interested in riding with you.

Bike touring doesn't require a lot of money.
Yes, it isn't easy making $100,000 a year with art.
No, it isn't hard making enough to support a bike tour.

There is a chance the OP is a troll, but there's also a chance she's not. So let's not be too sure about conclusions here. It seems better to give the benefit of the doubt than to accuse with false conclusions or assumptions. I'd rather give the benefit.

One thing that made this thread worth the read is that i confirmed there are no national parks within about 500mi of me
good lord- I am in a national parks desert.
Natural prairies instead of endless fields of corn and beans- that's a nice thought as its 10deg outside.

This.
Fairly certain this is a troll but if it’s not, these forums are the last place OP should be looking for riding partners.
Most people here are rational cyclists of some sort(A&S regulars excluded ofc)
Not artists looking to pedal their dog across the country with no money and no plan.

There's a guy in Atlanta who rode to the Gulf Coast of Alabama wearing a fedora, on a BSO bike with a dog in his basket.

And when the dog food ran out halfway across the Mojave, he sold art to cacti to buy more ... at the store which wasn't there. it was such a cool story.
I have already tried to help the OP (assuming she is real.) Some of the rest of you need help only a trained counselor could provide.
Thanks to @Spoonrobot and to the few others who actually offered practical suggestions.
