I have a chainsaw that is stellar and a shovel that is awesome. Sadly, no confusing graphs of performance improvement that was promised.

I bought bulk granola from the food co-op today. I'm pretty much a hippie now.

I'll be disappointed if you don't have one of those little mixers to make the juice in your bottle while you're on the go.
I've seen better days.

Paging Dr @Heathpack and/or other cat-knowledgeable folks.
I took Jackie to the vet yesterday. Good news is the vet says she seems to be overall in excellent health except for one minor issue. She got her shots and the bill was a reasonable $120.
BUT....the vet said Jackie has some tartar issues on her teeth and some gingivitis in her gums, and said that unchecked this could cause immune problems down the road, so they do suggest she get this treated.
The estimate for the dental work, including preop blood work, anesthesia, etc. comes to approx $800 which may not seem like a lot, but my wife totally balked "we are not spending $800 to get her teeth cleaned!"
So my questions are as follows:
1. Is there a food or oral crunch I can give her that will help her dental health, or is that a gimmick?
2. Is there any real danger to the cat's overall health (eg immune system) if we postpone or ignore the dental work, or is purely a dental issue?
I don't think they were deceiving me and they didn't really pressure me, but they did recommend we get the work done sometime in the future.
Comments? Do I need to go to catforums.org??

Isn’t Jackie a young cat?
I’m not the best person to ask about GP stuff like dentals. But here’s my two cents. Yes cats need dental care. They get periodontal disease which can lead to chronic immune stimulation which has wide-ranging ramifications in the body over time. And they can get tooth root infections, which can cause pain, tooth loss and other complications like oro-nasal fistulas.
If you’re going to do a dental in a cat, you should do it right. Do the blood work and anesthesia monitoring and so on.
So yes, frequent dentals are “best practice” as far as the cats health goes. It’s not a question of ethics any more than your recommendation of a colonoscopy is ethically suspect. You recommend it because it’s best for your patient. The only reason you’re balking in the cats case is money. That’s a value judgement on your end as to what the cat is monetarily worth to you. Which is fine. But the implication that’s there’s something fishy about the recommendation is about as crazy as someone implying you have ulterior motives for recommending the colonoscopy.
My 25 hour hospital bill for my bike crash last week was $42000. This is just the hospital bill, not doctors, not ER, and does not include the radiographic studies. Lol, I love it when people complain about their veterinary bills.
You can try feeding your cat crunchy cat food if you’re not doing that already. In some cats, this can slow down the development of tartar build up.

Don’t be fooled by inflated hospital “bill” which typically is overstated by a factor of 10. That’s an entirely different can of worms.

Sorry Heathpack. I hope your recovery is speedy and complete. No one has the vaguest notion how to treat concussion, as far as I can tell. The pendulum seems to be swinging in the direction of more activity, but caution is certainly advised.

Lots of relateable news this morning. I wish you the best, @Heathpack.
My most recent concussion took me a full six months to begin to feel somewhat normal again. More like a year to (fully) recover. I lost a lot of memory capacity, as well as outright memory. It's one thing with my wife, but when I start asking my sisters about timelines, it becomes a little bit embarrassing. That's the thing I lost almost entirely. The ability to re-construct a timeline. Conversations, events==all of it gone. Fortunately I still remember how to ride a bike. That particular concussion was a twisting blow--seems like those might be a bit more severe. I now wear a MIPS helmet. Better late than never, eh?

Yes. I rode them for years in the 80s-90s. And I have a set on the Chinabomb now. Used to use glue. Now I use the gluing tape from Tufo. It is so good and so easy, I will never do it any other way. Never a hint of roll off with either method.

My SIL, the chef, snagged a 170 bottle (or so) Vinotemp wine fridge for me at a restaurant supply auction for the amazing price of $300. That is just about how much red I have now that won’t fit in the existing 182 bottle fridge. Sweet. I keep most reds at least 10 years and worry about the ones that are at room temp. Of course the air conditioning at 72F helps, but I have been losing a bottle here and there lately. Mrs. rpen will kill me if I start building up the supply again in the unrefrigerated racks. There is absolutely not one additional square inch of space left in the house for another fridge. This is it. That damned www.WTSO.com gives me no peace. There must be 10 cut-rate wine offers every day. I am such a sucker for the Italians that seem to be a specialty of the website.

Sorry to hear about the crash and I wish you a speedy recovery. As you probably know, best treatment for post-concussion symptoms is patience.
Appreciate the comments.
Don’t be fooled by inflated hospital “bill” which typically is overstated by a factor of 10. That’s an entirely different can of worms.

Pretty much all day long I hear moaning about the cost of veterinary services when many of my expenses are the same. It’s especially ironic when coming from physicians, who routinely bill people 10x it seems.

Indy and Georgia-Mae's Doctor has idol status, in my book. Always square, always explaining the pro's and con's of every move, and the recipient of treats quite often. While we're on that subject, it's going to be warm today, so a stop for some ice cream for her and her coworkers is on the agenda today.
I hope things continue to move forward, @Heathpack.
