Normal overnight PSI loss for tubeless setup

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Normal overnight PSI loss for tubeless setup

Those of you who are running a tubeless setup with Orange Seal, what (if any) air/PSI are you losing from your tyres on an overnight basis? Thank you.

About 5lbs per day, light bicycle wheels with GP5000 tires and orange seal.

Interesting that tubeless looses so much overnight. I was thinking of switching to tubeless from my current setup of latex and GP4000. Thinking that tubeless would have the added benefit over latex tubes of not losing so much air. Guess not. Will be sticking with Latex tubes on the road since that is really my only complaint with them. I do not live in an area where we see lots of punctures that a tubeless would benefit me.

For me, the type of loss that we're talking about is from pre-ride to pre-ride, so it often includes 40-70 miles, possibly with a puncture, and then sitting for 1-3 days. I'm typically 5-10lbs low when I air up again, pre-ride. Also, there's a definite curve - it's ~5lbs for the first 24-48 hours and then it tapers off quite a bit - it's not like I'd be down 35lbs if it sat for a week, it'd more like 15.

But yes, you're making the right decision - going tubeless in the hopes of airing up less frequently would be one of the silly justifications that I've heard.

+1

15-20psi drop is about what I see when I inflate 1 a week.

Basically what you have to keep in mind is that any pressure gauge has to remove air from your tire in order to measure air pressure. Using your pump to measure air pressure means that you have to inflate the pump hose to measure tire pressure which will reduce tire pressure. For a narrow high pressure tire, attaching your pump could easily reduce tire pressure by 5 psi. A small tire pressure gauge might not reduce tire pressure as much. My experience with road tubeless tires has been exclusively with Campagnolo Shamal 2way fit wheels and Hutchinson road tubeless tires, starting out years ago with Fusion 2 tubeless tires. I now have Fusion5 road tubeless tires which I use very often without sealant. They hold air almost as well as butyl inner tubes and better than the latex tubes on my other bike with the non tubeless version of the same tires. One advantage to road tubeless tires is that they are almost immune to pinch flats, particularly if you use sealant.
Every time you check your tire pressure, you reduce it, especially for high pressure road tires

@noodle soup yeah, that makes sense. That's pretty much what I'm seeing too.

Another chime in to say 3-5psi per day, "bottoming out" at ~75psi. This is for 700x25 road tires. Starting lower, they lose less. My 700x35 drop just 1-2psi per day starting from 60psi, and don't generally get below 50psi at all.

But I air up before every ride, so it's a non-issue. Unless a tire is dropping +15psi overnight, it's not a problem.

About 5 psi. Maybe 10. I don't pay close attention. I mean I top them off before every ride, I just don't really look at where they started in relation to when I was last on the bike. So don't trust my number too much.

Same here. I’m not checking daily, but lose about 15 psi over the course of a week

Well my front tyre lost approx 20~25 PSI between ending a ride on Saturday and taking it out for a ride on Monday night. There was a long road trip where the bike was on a platform bike rack between those rides. To me, that seems like a lot of air loss. I wonder if I have a small puncture in my tyre.

the valve core might not be sealing properly. Try replacing the core with a new one.

Sometimes people screw the entire valve in too tight, and it doesn't seal well. Try releasing the air, and reset the valve onto the rim.

You measured at the end of the ride? If so, I'd second noodlesoup's recommendation on checking the valve core and also the valve seating. I've had similar problems with stems (funnily, the Orange Seal stems that look oh-so-cool didn't work very well for me). A puncture mid-ride could explain the pressure loss, but you shouldn't have a small leak in the casing or around the beads - the OS would have sealed it.

Thanks folks! I'll take a look at the core tonight. Don't know why I never thought of that!

@noodle soup and @WhyFi I just wanted to circle back and let you know that I took the valve core out, cleaned it up as best I could, and then re-inserted it. This seems to have solved my air loss problem. So thank you both very much! Cheers.
