SRAM GX2.1 10 with extender
Hello. My set up is 50/34 and 11/36 and I have a 10 speed SRAM Force road shifters. I know I need a compatible long cage rear derailleur but there is a medium cage SRAM GX 2.1 10 speed at a local store on sale 50% off. This GX 2.1 medium has the spec of 32 cog and 35 max. Will adding a derailleur extender work with my set up? I know I can just get a long cage and be done with but if it works and save a few bucks, why not. Thanks.

Not quite as the derailleur hanger extender doesn't change the chain wrap or anything. You are probably best getting the correct derailleur or seeing if you can get the right cage for the one you are looking at or just run a smaller cassette. It is possible it might run but the GX probably wasn't meant to run on a road set up so you could be maxing it out quite a bit.

It'll clear the 36t but it won't be enough wrap. SRAM is not conservative like Shimano when it comes to these spec limits. Get a long cage or try 46/34 with 12-36 and see if they're lying about that 35t wrap capacity 😅
Edit: ok so actually I am not sure if I have the short cage or the medium cage, but I run 50/34 with 12-32 (wrap of 36) and it just barely works (had to finesse the b screw perfectly). On my other wheel with a 11-32 it just barely doesn't (37 wrap - can't ride in small-small but I never do so it's no problem for me). Based on this I'm going to guess that I have the medium cage which has 35t wrap, and not the short cage with 30t wrap. I stand on my comment that the medium cage will clear a 36t big cog, though. And an extender may get you one tooth more depending on hanger geometry but otherwise isn't meant to add to total chain capacity.

Thanks for your replies. I have just ordered an X9 10 speed rear derailleur from eBay. Supposed to get it by middle of April. Can't wait to try it.
